The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Clearwater, Florida began operating as a volunteer organization on May 29, 1914. The first mission of the Coast Guard Auxiliary was to provide aid and assistance to member municipalities during storms and emergencies. In 1940, the Coast Guard Auxiliary became a National Service Organization (NSO). In 1951, the Coast Guard Auxiliary changed its name to the Clearwater Marina Volunteer Group. In 1967, the Marina Volunteer Group became an affiliate of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Reserve Force. On October 1, 1984, USCG Reserve Force members organized into one corps under command of Rear Admiral Tom Foley. The Clearwater Marina Volunteer Group is now known as the Port Tampa Marine Corps Unit (PtMCU). Since its establishment as a volunteer organization, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has provided more than 15 million hours of service to our community and nation. Clearwater is a city in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Clearwater was founded in 1892 as an agricultural and citrus plantation town on Tampa Bay. In 1942, it became the location of one of the largest Japanese American internment camps in the United States during World War II. The city's economy has been based on fishing and boatbuilding since before the development of Tampa Bay; today, it is a bedroom community for south central Miami-Dade County. The arrival of Europeans to what is now Clearwater began with Spanish explorers in 1565 A.D., but little is known about their activities hereabouts other than that they named some hills "Cristobal" and "Isabel," found six bays or channels ("Bocas" or "Tampa"), explored these areas until they departed in 1579 A.D., after which no definite reference to this place can be made until 1606 A.D., when Don Francisco de Mena y Salgado de la Vega discovered land at this point on his way from Cuba to Hispaniola (now Haiti). At that time there were only two villages located along Tampa Bay: one near St Petersburg (to the east) and another called Saint Petersburg by Spaniards because its headwaters flowed into that bay -possibly due to a windblown sandbank off recommendation by Captain John Smith while he lay anchored offshore near what would become Clearwater circa 1764A.(1) However, we have evidence from historical records painting a more varied picture depicting both thriving agrocolonial villages situated along Hillsborough Peninsula going back centuries prior such as those mentioned above as well as various sugar cane plantations active here throughout much of pre-Columbian America including what would later become TampaBay itself It should be noted though that any mention of theseagoingvillages must take into account early modern Native American occupants who had long tenure over lands stretching alluvial fan out across present day Hillsborough Peninsula prior thereto including extensive flooding/soil disturbance & subsequent occupation & intermarriage between Paleoindians & Archaic period Tequestras numerous Creek Warriors also known’s as “Mukwis” whose homeland extended across present day Hillsborough PeninsulaIn short then several hundred years ago tribes living hereabouts primarily Apalachicola Chota Sarasota Coosa Key West Gulf Coast Wakulla Palm Beach , Indian River Lagoon Gadsden Pensacola Okaloosa Rusk Walton Seminole Tallahassee Etowah Nome Choctawhatchee Creek Ocalaoka Miccosukee Calhoun Alligator Alley Lakeland Largo Live Oaks Bradford Island
