Clearwater is a city in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,451 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alachua County. Clearwater is bordered by Lake Okeechobee to the north and east, Gainesville to the south, and St. Petersburg to the west. The name "Clearwater" was given to it by Captain James Cook on his third voyage around South America in 1778 as part of his mapping expedition. The name means "clear water," from kalwin (калинин), meaning "milky" or "clear." In 1819, Colonel John Armstrong moved his military headquarters from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Clearwater after General Andrew Jackson's army forced Mexico out of Texas and into Mexican territory. In 1881, Clearwater developed as a whaling port with early whaleships docking there for processing before being exported further afield. The town grew rapidly during World War II when naval bases were established there for both American and British navies; today's downtown area was built on land that had been used for shipbuilding and whaling activities until then.
