Clearwater, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 455 at the 2010 census. Clearwater is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community began as a fishing village on Clearwater Bay in 1881 and grew rapidly due to its oyster farming industry. By 1915, Clearwater had become the largest city in Duval County with a population of 1,500 people. However, after years of decline in business activity and growth for other nearby communities such as St. Johns River City and Jacksonville Beach (both which had larger populations), Clearwater's Mayor Roy Jones said that he would "rather see clear water than live near an oily seaport". In December 1965, following months of negotiations between theDuval County Commissioners and representatives from five other towns within Duval County over plans to annex land into Clearwater limits - including Live Oak and Belle Isle - officials announced that all activities associated with the city's fishing industry were abandoned except for occasional dredging operations necessary for fish processing; any new development would have to be approved by a referendum vote instead. In 1984, local businessmen David Laughlin and Donnie Brown renovated downtown Clearwater into what became known as "The Big Apple" mall; it was one of the first shopping malls in Duval County. The mall closed in 1997 but has been redeveloped several times since then including most recently into an upscale hotel/residence complex called One Park Place which opened in early 2019 adjacent to Jacksonville Landing theme park. According to the 2000 US Census there were 463 people living in Clearwater Township who identified themselves as being either white or black (94% white). As of 2010 there were 455 residents living within the unincorporated portions ofDuval County which makes up only 2% of total Clearwater Township population size while 94% identify themselves as white or black according to US Census figures

The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Indian River, which made it an ideal spot for trading with Spanish missions and Native American villages. By 1851, Clearwater had a population of over 1,000 people and was considered one of the most important towns in Florida. The town declined in popularity during the late 1800s as shipping stopped coming to Clearwater because of pollution from railroad construction nearby. However, it regained its importance as a commercial center after World War II when large ships began arriving to load supplies shipped across the Gulf of Mexico from South America. Clearwater is a community in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The population was 9,912 as of the 2010 census. It is bordered by Miami to the east, Biscayne Bay to the southwest, and Key Biscayne Island to the west. The first permanent settler in Clearwater was a group of Spanish explorers who explored the area in 1513. They named the community "San Salvador" after Saint Augustine Cathedral in Spain. The first white person to live in Clearwater was James A. Cook who sailed through its waters on his HMS Resolution during his circumnavigation of North America in 1775. In 1892, Clearwater became part of Miami–Dade County when it was created from parts of Miami Beach and Kendall County. Prior to that it had been part of Cubanilla (now Overtown) Township. In November 1952, elections were held for members of county government and all seven seats on the county commission were up for election; four men (including future governorachiefs Lawton Chiles and Manuel Diaz) ran as Democrats and three men (including future mayor Carlos Zeddel) ran as Republicans; Cook remained an independent elector because he refused to support either party’s nominees. At that time only single-member districts existed within Miami–Dade County so commissioners were elected at-large without regard to party affiliation
