The Clermont Army Ammunition Plant was a military munitions depot located in Clermont, Florida. It operated from the early 1920s until its closure in 1970. The plant produced shells, rockets, and other munitions for the United States Armed Forces. The first ammunition depot in Clermont was opened in 1920 by the US Military Banque Nationale de France. The facility was two stories high and employed 350 workers. In 1927, a three-story annex was built to house equipment and storage buildings. This addition also housed a training school for enlisted soldiers. In 1941, the plant became part of the War Production Board and changed its name to the War Materials Depot (WMD). By 1945, it had become an integral part of the United States military system with facilities across America used to produce munitions. After World War II, production at WMD shifted towards propellants for ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons development. In 1970, WMD closed its doors after 36 years of operations. At that time, it remained one of only a few remaining artillery plants in America that produced projectiles for firearms use. Today, remnants of this once thriving industry can be found scattered throughout central Florida; most notably at what is now known as Shell Point State Park near Live Oak Beach on Jupiter Island
