The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Clermont, Florida, was founded on December 1, 1922. At that time, there were only two coast guard detachments in the state of Florida. The Clermont detachment was created to support the St. Petersburg detachment and provide mutual aid during emergencies along the Gulf Coast. In 1926, a new coastal patrol station was built at Inlet Beach and the first volunteer crew was organized. Additional stations were opened throughout the 1920s and 1930s; however, it wasn’t until World War II that tensions along the Gulf Coast began to increase. Coastal patrols became more frequent and their missions changed from providing general assistance to tracking down smugglers and criminals to helping protect military convoys transporting munitions to Japan. After World War II ended, volunteers stopped coming to help with coastal patrols and instead turned their attention towards other duties such as maintaining airports and aids to navigation. However, the Coast Guard Auxiliary still exists today as an organization dedicated to keeping our communities safe by providing emergency services such as helicopter rescues and search-and-rescue operations.

Clermont, Florida is a small town in the panhandle of Florida. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Leon County metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore Clermont were Spanish and Portuguese traders looking for trade routes to Mexico City. In 1692, two Frenchmen named Jacques Marquette and Jean Nicolet explored the region. They called it "Clermont" because they found a creek there that looked like Clermont in France. In 1733, Colonel George Rogers Clark discovered Pensacola Bay and laid out Fort Stedman on what is now courthouse square in 1803 as part of his plans for developing the Northwest Territory. The future site of Clermont was chosen as its center because it had an ample water supply, good location for trading posts, and rich bottomland for farming purposes. A post office was established at Clermont in 1814, but no mail ever reached it because transportation was difficult to get to from nearby Mobile and other points eastward at that time. A store opened in 1825 by Captain John Sitton became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1903 when telephone service arrived here finally linking all these villages together with better communication than ever before possible. In 1838, a school was built on what is now courthouse square by Reverend Nathaniel Mifflin who also donated land for it which formed what is today's core of downtown Clermont village Square (also known as Court House Square). On July 4th 1861 local farmers took up arms against Confederate forces during the American Civil War when Union soldiers burned their barns and farms near present-day downtown while retreating after defeat at Putnam Hill outside of town limits; this event helped spur development in downtownClermont which continues to grow today with several new buildings (including One Government Center), mostly associated with government services or more recently business operations like law firms or health clinics catering to both publically funded entities (the University System) as well as private citizens ((such as Marriott Hotels)), many times taking advantage of building setbacks available only through zoning laws specific to each type/use clientele or commercial enterprise: indeed a prime example being First Baptist Church located just northwest corner Main Street & US Highway 1E just across street from Courthouse Square [now home to Plaza de la Venda] dedicated exclusively – since 1978 –to providing everyone who enters - tax payers included - convenient free parking directly next door!
