Clermont, Florida is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name of the town comes from French meaning "the well-known fort" or "a place where one can find water". The first settler in Clermont was A.J. Healy who had come to Monroe County in 1855 from New York City with his family and began to build a cabin on what is now Clermont's east side. In 1859 A.J.'s brother John built a log cabin on the west side of present day Clermont Boulevard just south of US 1 and north of FM 1557. In 1861 James Fenton arrived in Monroe County and founded Fort Fenton on land that he had purchased from Chief Osceola near modern day Jacksonville (Fenton also founded Clearwater). When Fort Fenton was destroyed by Seminole Indians in 1865, Varnum Coleman took over its management and started to build a two-story frame courthouse on what is now US 1 near today's intersection of NE 2nd Street and NW 3rd Avenue in downtown Clermont. This project was completed by 1870 but due to financial difficulties it failed and Coleman sold the property back to Healy for $1,500 which made him one of the richest men in southernFlorida In 1876 Jens Christensen opened a general store at what is now NE 2nd Street+NW 3rd Avenue just northeast of downtown Clermont with room for only 50 customers inside because there were no storefronts then adjacent to NE 2nd Street+. Because this store remained open until 1923 when it closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores coming into town during that time period, Christensen is considered one of the earliest commercial entrepreneurs who helped make Clermont an important center for trade within southwesternFlorida The first post office called Clermont opened on May 10, 1892 under mail order service operated by Elisha Cushman & Company under contract from Secretary Of War William McKinney Clermont became an incorporated community on May 20th 1903 with Wm Hite as its first mayor In 1905 husband/wife team George Moulding & Belle Haven Phelps purchased undeveloped land across SW 4th Avenue (nowNE 5th Ave) from Captains John Dillard & Augustus Herrington for $3,-000 which they used as their farmstead until their deaths several years later Belle Haven Phelps donated her entire estate plus another acre along SW 4th Ave., making it possible for St Johns University School District #326 to purchase land adjoining their farmstead acres which became campus buildings known as Phelps Hall . Mrs Phelps' donation also helped finance much needed infrastructure such as new streets and roads withinClarmont including present day NE 2nd Street+NW 3rd Avenue . Today students at St Johns use Phelps Hall extensively for all typesBurton Center-related classes such as Business Administration , Economics , Political Science & Spanish Language Classes
