Clermont, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida, about 15 miles southwest of Fort Myers. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It lies within the unincorporated community of Clermont and is part of the Naples-Ft. Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were English farmers who arrived in 1823. Presbyterians founded a church in 1829 and a post office was established in 1830. A cotton plantation was developed here around 1840 by John Crouch and others from Kentucky as part of what became known as "Cleveland Plantation." In 1850, Clermont had a school and two churches; one Presbyterian and one Methodist. In 1861, General Peebles sent 1,500 soldiers to help suppress Seminole Indian uprisings near Tampa Bay. When they returned home, they found that much of their equipment had been lost overboard on their return trip across the Gulf of Mexico; so they began operation of an agency called Clearwater for Negroes which served until 1865 when it was abolished by Vice President Andrew Johnson because he saw it as discriminating against white people. A new courthouse was built in 1902–03 with money provided by J.D.. Whitehead & Sons merchants who operated a store on Orange Avenue just east of US-27/SR-2 (later SR-352). The name change to Clermont after the death of General James Ewing whose family owned most of the land along Clearwater River where Clermont now stands: originally spelled Cleverestown but changed to its current spelling when several Ewings bought land adjacent to Clearwater River between 1854 and 1860 which formed what is now easternmost section #4 (west) side Lots 2 through 10 Allandale subdivision). A post office operated at Cleverestown from 1830 to 1911 although mail service stopped there permanently after 1907 when US 27 became concurrent with SR 352 (the later zip code). At some point during or after World War II local residents started growing citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges etc., so growth accelerated especially around 1940s creating numerous commercial farms including many still operating today including Davis Orchardosa groves off SR 352 south west corner lot #9

Clermont, Florida is a small town located in Volusia County, Florida. The Clermont community was founded in 1885 by J.D. Clermont and his father-in-law, John Hennessey. The town was named for the French city of Lermais, which was the location where J.D.'s grandfather had settled in 1851. In 1912, the community moved from its original location on the west side of Volusia County to its present site on the east side of the county. The population of Clermont increased from about 100 residents in 1912 to over 1,200 during World War II when it became a key military base for the United States Air Force and Army Forces Europe. After World War II ended, Clermont decreased in size as people left for better opportunities elsewhere inFlorida or emigrated to Canada or other countries. However, because of its importance as a postwar military base and due to its close proximity to Daytona Beach – both major tourist destinations – Clermont has regained some popularity over the past few decades as a sleepy seaside town with access to all that Daytona Beach has to offer tourists and locals alike. The history of Clermont begins with Jardine Hennessey who purchased land east of Palm Bay on December 14th, 1885 from James Wetherill Jr., one of America's first settlers in that area (see: History Of Palm Bay). Mr. Hennessey built homes here until 1893 when he sold most of his land northward along State Road A1A (later US 192) across from Interstate 95 so that he could build an estate at what is now known as Lake Placid Park (see: History Of Lake Placid Park). When Mr. Hennessey's home burned down February 26th 1896 (the date commemorates Jacksonville's first fire), flames spread quickly through his extensive plantation holdings and $5 million worth ($102 million adjusted GDP) worth of crops were lost – an event which helped spur investment into agriculture throughout central Florida; see: Plantation Fires In Central Florida). Gussie Lambert boughtMr Hennessey's estate near what is now called Eustis Boulevard; see: Gussie Lambert & His Estate And What It Means To Today’s Residents].
