The unit has served in various capacities since its inception, including being a part of the Florida National Guard and later the Alabama National Guard. In 2006, Clermont became the first city in South Florida to adopt a national guard flag. The Clermont National Guard Flag is designed by artist/designer Ernestine Cook and features a red field with white stars at each end,representing the city's motto "E pluribus unum" or "Out of Many, One." The design was inspired by both the United States Constitution and Mount Rushmore National Monument. The flag is flown from buildings and vehicles throughout town, as well as at military events such as parades and funerals. It has also been used to represent Clermont during various state visits by U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.

The unit was first organized as the 1st Battalion of the Florida National Guard and it served in the initial stages of World War II. On September 2, 1945, the battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion and its members were mobilized for service in Japan. The battalion returned to United States after the war and disbanded on October 20, 1945.
