Clermont is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area. The population was 9,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The Clermont community began as a trading post on the west bank of the St Johns River in 1811. A large tract of land was purchased by Capt. John Foard and named after him, Foard's Corners. A Post Office was established at Foard's Corners on December 2, 1814, and served until January 1, 1865 when it was moved to Clermont due to its proximity to Fort Brooke on Key Biscayne Bay. Agrarian settlement began immediately within sight of Fort Brooke, with early pioneers planting cotton and corn crops near what is now Northeast Fourth Street and Northwest Second Avenue. By 1830 only six farmers remained in Clermont; these were Isaac Goodnow (a German immigrant), Peter Beecham (a British subject), James Moultrie (an Irishman), Nicholas Hennepin (a Swedish subject), Moses Woodruff (an American) and Lewis Casson (a French citizen). In 1831 local merchants formed an agricultural society which bought 3 acres each from five farmers for $1 per acre; this group became known as "The Five Men." They erected a frame courthouse in 1834 which still stands today within one block of Southeast Second Avenue between Northeast Third Street and northeast Fourth Street. In 1835 Indian hostilities caused much excitement throughout northeastern Florida; all residents of Lee County fled for their lives to southwestern Florida including many prominent citizens including Jno Adams who had builtFort Brooke into a major military installation protecting southeastern Florida against Seminole Indian attacks. The Five Men decided that they would not leave their land unoccupied so they again organized themselves into an Agricultural Society which bought 6 more acres from three more farmers for $2 per acre giving them total occupancy of 24 acres/square mile - thus becoming The Farmington Group or "The Big 5." They erected anotherframe courthouse on new property just east of current Northeast Third Street between NE First Avenue and NE Second Avenue - soon known as The Courthouse Square building because Of its many well-known streetscapes including Southeast Third Street itself home to several businesses such as Piggly Wiggly followed by Sears & Roebuck before moving uptown along NE First Avenue until it reached current NW Sixth Ave where it stood until 1955 when it burned down resulting in extensive damage.. Formalities related to America's oldest war started here with drums beating skiesward...the first steps towards personal combat that would define our nation forever! A final review of historic events leads us back to November 30th 1775 when Captain George Washington set sail aboard USS Constitution carrying over 150 young Marines under his command bound for Mobile Bayous hurricane relief operations! Just prior depart he sent messengers ashore signaling his intent to lead those Marines into battle should something happen ashore! After disembarking the men boarded two boats manned by Lt.(jg.) Samuel Barron USN Commandant US Naval Militia under orders from Washington himself!!! This event marked history in numerous ways starting with our country’s first actual open conflict...andres de Vasconcellos fought bravely beside Major General!! Clermont, Florida is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,222 at the 2010 census. Clermont is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area and is home to several shopping malls and restaurants. The first Europeans to come to Clermont were French fur traders who tentatively landed on the coast of present day Brevard County on December 7, 1795. They named their new settlement after Jean-Baptiste Clermont, Sieur de la Fayette who had fought in the American Revolutionary War as a colonel in the Third Battalion of La Fayette's Regiment of Marines. In 1802 Commissioners Gadsden and Wilkinson decided to name their town for General James K. Polk, who had won fame during his successful run for President as a Democrat in 18 44 against Andrew Jackson. In 1851 Jno Purdy built a sawmill there which continued operation until 1907 when it was replaced by an electric mill which operated until 1957. In 1906 Stonington Oil Depot #1 opened and became one of the earliest service stations in Southeast Florida with its own gasoline pump outside of Clermont village limits; it still stands today (2008). The post office called Clermont "Purdyville" from 1915-1920 before changing its name to Marion after Marion Leland Keyes III (1875-1957), husband of Flora Keyes Dodge (brought over from Cincinnati).
