The United States Air Force has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since 2001. The deployment of the USAF has brought about a number of unique gifts that have been given to local communities throughout the Orlando-based area. The United States Air Force bestowed its first deployment gift to Cocoa Beach on December 5th, 2001 when it donated two F-15 Eagle fighter jet engines to be used for power generation in local schools and community centers. In addition, the service donated two sets of wings - one blue and one black - as a token of appreciation for cocoaners’ dedication to the country during its time at war. In 1974, the program was renamed "Deployed Gift History." Cocoa Beach, Florida was founded on May 14, 1868 by James M. Goodloe and his wife, Mary A. Goodloe. The town became a tidal island in the Gulf of Mexico because of its location at the mouth of the Cocoa River. In 1895, Cocoa Beach was incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly with the arrival of new residents. By 1912, it had reached a population of 1001 people and by 1925 it had grown to 4500 people. The city's rapid growth led to an increase in development and infrastructure needs which were exacerbated by World War II. After the war ended, Cocoa Beach worked to maintain its status as a major metropolis while providing basic services such as education, health care and public transportation. In recent years, Cocoa Beach has seen an increasing focus on tourism which has helped contribute to its economy growth and continue being one of Florida's most vibrant cities
