The history of the United States Army in Cocoa Beach, Florida began with a group of men who formed an infantry regiment in 1868. The regiment was later renamed the 5th Infantry Regiment and served during the Spanish-American War. After the war, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Cavalry Regiment and fought in World War I. In World War II, the regiment was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment and served in Europe and North Africa. After World War II, the 1st Cavalry Regiment was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other units. The 5th Infantry Regiment continued to serve until it was disbanded in 1951. The 2nd Infantry Battalion also began serving in Cocoa Beach from 1868-1871 but it never became a real military unit until after 1895 when it merged with another infantry battalion that had been spawned by WWI veterans from Panama City. The merger resulted in what is now called “The Reserve battalion” which remained active until 1970 when it too dissolved due to budget cuts within the Department of Defense. After WWI ended, soldiers returned home for various reasons including time off or because their enlistment expired. Many of these soldiers moved back to Cocoa Beach where they began businesses such as grocery stores, banks, or auto dealerships. However, not all of these soldiers lived permanently in Cocoa Beach; some left town for various reasons while others simply retired early because they were done with service or they ran out of money to continue fighting wars overseas (i.e., WWI). As local businesses slowly died down due to long absences by their employees or lack of interest from customers, some men decided that there would be no need for an infantry regiment stationed at Cocoa Beach anymore since there were already many other troops stationed here throughout much of south Florida (including Ft Myers). This led to a group of men being appointed officers who manned posts such as police chief and postmaster (which is still done today). Additionally, some men decided that this would be an excellent place for them to start their own businesses so they bought land around town and built homes – one example being Donahue’s Grocery store which has been open continuously since 1925! One thing that did survive from WWII was air defense activity along UFHP property; some obsolete miles-long towers still stand today used for target practice by students at nearby Fort Walton County School District!
