As the county seat of Brevard County, Cocoa Beach has been a major port and commercial center for over a century. The city was founded in 1853 as part of the Canaveral Peninsula. Cocoa Beach, Florida is a small town in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 9,305 at the 2000 census. It is located on the north coast of Palm Beach County and includes the towns of Cocoa Beach and West Palm Beach. The name "Cocoa" derives from the navigational tree called "The cocoa bough." The town began as a fishing village on the now-deserted mouth of Palm Beach Creek. In 1868, John A. Cofer, an entrepreneur from Stonington, Connecticut, developed Cocoa beach into a resort town with white sand beaches and oceanfront properties. He built two hotels – The Cofer House and The Fort Myers Resort – along Flagler Boulevard and named them after his father's birthplace in Germany (Aachen). By 1930, Cocoa had become one of America's most popular tourist destinations for retirees seeking sun tanning privileges on white sand beaches while watching dolphins at Dolphin World or taking advantage of rates for ship-based tours to see saltwater crocodiles off Islamorada Island. In 1922, businessman Wanda Gifford started developing adjacent land east of Flagler Boulevard into what would become known as West Palm Beach. She opened her first store there in 1923 and became involved in many local civic affairs before selling her interest in 1945 to developer Clifford Barron who renamed it Barron Park while expanding its boundaries to include present day Cocoa Beach
Cocoa Beach is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the north, Palm Beach County to the east and south, and Martin County to the west. The area that now makes up Cocoa Beach was first populated in the early 1800s by Native Americans. In 1845, a group of Englishmen named remarking on what they saw as an inviting golf course decided to settle in this part of Florida. They named their new town after a place called cocoa beans which they found growing wild near their farmstead. The town quickly grew into a major shipping and trade center for local farmers who exported sugar cane, cotton and other crops from nearby plantations. By 1880, Cocoa Beach had become one of Florida's most important commercial areas with over 100 businesses located in downtown alone.
