Cocoa Beach is a small, sandy beach town located in the Brevard County portion of Florida. The population was 8,715 at the 2010 census. Cocoa Beach's history dates back to 1868 when it was incorporated as an unincorporated community on the site of present-day Cocoa Beach. The name "Cocoa" was given to the area by Spanish traders because of its abundance of cocoa beans. The first inhabitants of Cocoa Beach were Native American people who hunted and gathered wild caught seafood in what is now known as Lower Park Avenue. In 1868, a group of Englishmen who had been stranded onshore while sailing from England landed at what is now Cocoa Beach and founded a trading post which they named Fort Davies. The English began to build houses here in 1870 and by 1876, they had organized a school and built a lighthouse which still stands today. In 1886, Fort Davies became part of Palm Bay after being transferred from Fort Myers to that location from Stonington (now Jupiter). The post served as an immigration checkpoint for many years before it closed in 1924. After its closure, the fortifications were used as storage for materials used during World War II including ammunition dumps and barracks for military personnel stationed here including the 1st Marine Division during World War II. Cocoa Beach is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Daytona Beach–Hollywood, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cocoa Beach was founded on December 12, 1903 by developers John and Belle Bourgeois with the intention of developing it into a seaside resort town. The town's name comes from "coquina" or coral shell and refers to its white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters. Until after World War II, Cocoa Beach was one of the most prosperous small towns in Florida due to its location on barrier Island between Daytona Beach and Orlando and its wide variety of businesses including restaurants, hotels, nightlife, shipyards and aircraft manufacturers. However during the late 1940s through early 1960s when various large corporations vacated their properties for other locations in Central Florida due to war-time rationing and economic depression; Cocoa Beach lost some of its commercial appeal as well as much of its population because many people left for jobs in larger cities such as Jacksonville or Tallahassee. In fact only 2% of the original 7,839 residents still live there today while more than 60% have moved away since 1970 when Interstate 4 made it possible for people to commute easily to larger metropolitan areas without leaving their homes.
