Today's economy relies largely on tourism - both from visitors who come to visit local attractions like lighthouse tours or boat trips through the tidal waterways that run through the town center or from people who work in nearby Sarasota or Manatee counties during summer months when local beaches are closed to vehicles because of high water levels caused by thunderstorms that occur frequently in these areas during winter months. There are also a few businesses that provide services to residents such as Internet service, lawn care, pet custody/care and car rentals/leasing services; however most businesses have closed down over time due to lack of customers or competition from larger counterparts within neighboring communities. There are currently no plans underway by Cocoa leadership to reopen any business entities within the town limits as there is limited potential tax revenue generated from those activities given that cocoanut exports account for only 3% of total economic activity within town limits
