Cocoa, Florida ( pronounced /koʊkə/) is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,815 at the 2010 census. Cocoa is located on the Gulf of Mexico about halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. It is also home to two naval air stations: NAS Pensacola and NAS Jacksonville. The cocoa beans that are used to produce chocolate were first grown on this site in 1875 by José Bautista Criollo and his brother-in-law Manuel Rosales. The cocoa beans were roasted on an open fire before being exported to Europe where they were used to make chocolate sauce and other products. In 1912, the JB&P mill was built in Cocoa and became one of the largest in South America. JB&P continued production until it closed in 1966. In 1957, John Wetherald bought part of the company from its former owner Joseph Pulitzer who had purchased it for $2 million dollars back then. Wetherald formed a new company called EMI which began producing records for American Record Corporation (ARCO), one of the leading record companies of that time. In 1968 EMI merged with Philips Records which became known as Philips Records America Incorporated after Philips Industries merged with Columbia Pictures Corporation in 1986). After years of negotiations, ARCO sold its share of EMI to Time Warner Music Group in 1994 for $750 million (). Cocoa, Florida is a small town located in Sarasota County, Florida and is the county seat of Sarasota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,591. The name "Cocoa" comes from the Seminole word "koo-kaan," which means "Lake Kissimmee." The first Europeans to visit Cocoa were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on October 26, 1514 when they discovered this area between what is now Sarasota County and Miami Beach. However, it wasn't until 1763 that Englishman James Cooksight visited this area and named it after Sir John Hawkins's shipwreck off Key Largo. In 1836, lawyer Augustus Caesar Polk purchased 640 acres of land near present-day Cocoa for $5 per acre. He built a home there called Polk's Fort onland where he entertained Ulysses S. Grant during his presidency in 1868-1869. In 1870, local entrepreneur Wm. Fenton built a sugarcane plantation here which became known as Fenton's Plantation because he owned most of the land within its boundaries at that time. After World War II ended with VE Day (June 8th), many Japanese Americans who had been interned during World War II moved into Cocoa following their victory over Japan in 1945. They started construction of two large military airfields here - Marietta Air Force Base and Grissom Air Force Base - which helped contribute to increased economic growth in CocOA during the postwar years. As part of neighborhood redevelopment efforts after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much property in 1998-1999, city leaders decided to change the name of one block adjacent to downtown from Gifford Park Avenue to Susie Greene Drive in honor of Susie Greene King who served as mayor from 1993 until her death in 2003; she was instrumental in developing downtown Cocoa into one of the most vibrant neighborhoods within cities across America during her tenure as mayor
