Coffee began as a way to provide energy and focus for military personnel in the 1800s. At first, coffee was ground into small doses and drunk black. Coffee beans were not commonly traded, so it took many years for coffee to be classified as a food item. In 1912, Dutch Schultz founded J.M. Smucker Company in Reading, Pennsylvania with the goal of bringing coffeebeans from Africa to America cheaply and commercially. The Smucker Company became one of the most successful American companies of its time and is still operating today. The first Cafeteria Row restaurant was opened in Cocoa Beach by Fenton Kukos in 1922 with all-day breakfast services available until 5 p.m., making it one of the first commercial restaurants in Florida that offered such an early breakfast program. In 1925, The World’s Fairgrounds featured an exhibit on Coffee – A Symbol of Americanism which included a display case full of rare Ethiopian coffees from Gaudium & Tefferi Cooperative Store #1 (now part of Starbucks). This event contributed significantly to increasing awareness about coffee around the world and helped spur interest in buying beans from developing countries such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In 1959, Grady Spears opened his second Cafeteria Row restaurant called The Ocean Breeze on State Road 1A just north of TCPalm Drive near US Highway 1A/State Road 447 intersection serving iced tea through out the day with morning yogurt available until 10 a.m., afternoon sandwiches until 2 p.m., and late night snacks including pizza until 11 p.m.. Grady Spears is considered pioneer behind much later chains such as Tim Hortons which began opening up shop throughout Central Florida after he closed down his original locations at Cafeteria Row restaurants across Central Florida starting in 1984

The first espresso machine ever made in America was delivered to Gainesville by Italian immigrant Angelo Moroder in 1912. Cocoa, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,836 at the 2010 census. Cocoa is located on US-27 and US-41. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The development of cocoa in the area began with a plantation by Tom Pritchett in 1875. In 1902, John Witherspoon opened the first grocery store in the area and from there began to grow cocoa beans for export to other parts of the United States and Europe. The town was founded on December 12, 1903 by Dora Aileen King and her husband Jerald Charles King Sr., who were farmers before moving to Cocoa to start their own business. The first post office was established in 1905. In 1916, Lewis Sauer opened his service station near Cocoa Boulevard and Patton Avenue which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Coco for its convenience store, gas stations and restaurants that served up local cuisine such as coffeepot meals and peach pie pies. In recent years, many new businesses have sprung up around the mall including a movie theater (the Jupiter Regency), several restaurants (including Joe's Crab Shack & Grill) as well as several craft stores such as Studio City Market Artspace which has been home to various art exhibitions throughout year since 2007.
