When the USS Constitution sailed into Cocoa Harbor in 1835, she was one of the largest ships in America. She carried more than a thousand sailors and marines, and her crew numbered more than two hundred. The Constitution's arrival signaled a new era for Cocoa - it was now the town of choice for Navy ships stationed at Pensacola, Florida. The Constitution's stay here was brief, but her memory will last long. On March 1st, 1836, while flagship of Rear Admiral John Rodgers' squadron off Pensacola Bay, the Constitution collided with another ship - this time an American brigantine called CSS Georgia. Both vessels were heavily damaged, but no lives were lost on either side. Two years later, on November 8th 1838 - just weeks after Commodore James Kenedy's task force had captured Mobile Bay - President Jackson ordered Commodore Sidney Johnston to sail his flagship prizeship HMCS Windsor to PensacolaBay to pick up navy officers and supplies needed for Operation Yoo-Hoo (the Louisiana Purchase). It was during this visit that he met Commodore George Dewey who would become captain of HMS Cornwallis shortly afterwards. In 1840 Captain George Dewey again visited Naval Station Pensacola when he commanded HMS Ganges; during this trip he learned about naval tactics from Commodore Jervis Polk who would later become Vice Admiral John Dahlgren's boss at sea. In the early 1800s, Cocoa was a small town in the Swamp. It was founded by George Smith and his family in 1798. The town had a post office from 1800 to 1827, and it had one school from 1826 to 1930. In 1907, Cocoa became an incorporated municipality. After World War II, Cocoa experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on the Florida-Alabama border and its importance as a manufacturing center for tires, automobile parts, plastics, chemicals and other products. The population of Cocoa peaked at over 100,000 in the 1960s but has since declined to about 60,000 today.
Cocoa, Florida was settled by the Spanish in 1565. The area now known as Cocoa was part of the province of Santa Teresa de la Vega. In 1614, Captain Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered a bay on the east coast of Cuba which he named San Marcos after Saint Michael the Archangel. After landing here, Menéndez founded what is now called Santiago de Cuba and named it La Habana. In 1661, Juan Ponce de León arrived in this area and found salt marshes and an estuary that he christened Puerto Rico. He also discovered sugarcane growing here and built a mill to process the fruit. The area became a county seat in 1834.
