The battalion was stationed at Camp LeJeune from 1941-1945 and then at Fort Myers from 1945-1949. A year later, Captain John Smith discovered Coconuts Island when he sailed past it on his way to found Miami. After Captain Smith's discovery, Muskegon Islands became part of Miami by treaty with Spain in 1795 and were uninhabited until 1800 when they were claimed by both Spain and England as part of the Coasts of Florida Treaty Agreement The area now known as Coconut Creek was originally inhabited by Kissimmee tribe members who called their village "Kissimmee". They built their homes around a hammock that ringed their village center and traded with other Seminole tribes for goods from Havana Bay. When Fort Brooke was built in 1796 to protect Spanish settlers along the coast from American attack, some of these native residents relocated to what is now Coconut Creek due to fear for their safety during wartime times; however most continued living nearby until after 1815 when white people began settling in this area. Coconut Creek was founded in 1884 by Captain Jameson and his brother-in-law, David Stuart. After a trip to Cuba, they brought back coconut palms and began growing coconuts. They named their plantation Coconut Creek after the palm trees that grew there. The first waves of settlers arrived in 1885 and soon built plantations near where Coconut Creek now stands. In 1907, the name was changed from Coconut Creek Plantation to Coconut creek Manor. In 1914, the estate was sold to J. B. Stuart who made it a private home for himself and his family. He also developed a small citrus industry on the plantation which continued until World War II when coconut production stopped because of the war effort.
