The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Coconut Creek, Florida began in 1945 with the organization of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. This unit was mobilized for active duty in World War II and participated in combat operations throughout the war. The battalion redeployed to Guam during the Korean War and then returned to Okinawa before deploying to South Vietnam. The battalion served as an assault rifle company and its members were awarded many medals including two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. Following the end of hostilities, the battalion demobilized at Camp Pendleton California and then deployed to Golfe du Luchon France as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear VF-1 aircraft squadron. After a successful deployment, this unit relocated back to coconut creek where it remains today as part of 2nd Marine Division. Cocoanut Creek is a small stream located in the eastern part of Citrus County, Florida. It is a tributary of the Miami River. The creek was named for the Coconut trees that grew along its banks. Coconuts were brought to this area by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In 1811, Nicholas Biddle purchased land near Cocoanut Creek from Seminole leader Osceola. This area became known as Biddle's Forest because of this purchase. The first Baptist church was built on Biddle's Forest in 1812. The creek was used for irrigation until 1910 when the Miami River was completed and it became an official waterway. By 1920, Cocoanut Creek had been renamed Coconut Creek after Samuel J. Scudder, who owned most of what is now Coconut Creek Park and donated much of his property to make this park available to local citizens and their children. Over time, many other organizations have also contributed to Coconut Creek Park including Girl Scouts, baseball teams, golf courses, etcetera The history of Cocoanut Creek starts with its naming by Spanish explorers in the 16th century as they discovered cocoa beans growing along its banks while exploring this area which later became known as Biddle’s Forest according to some sources (Biddles). In 1811 Nicholas Biddle purchased land near Cocoanut Creek from Seminole leader Osceola which made it one of two tracts that he acquired controlling much of what is now Orange County mainland east of Interstate 95/State Road 56 (later US-1) between 1912-1920 (Doyle). One thing that changed about these years though were English immigrants moving into southern Florida during this time period such as Samuel J. Scudder who founded Scudder Lakes Golf Course & Marina on slightly older but more valuable parcels adjoining his property adjacent to present day Cocoanut Creek beginning in 1916 and eventually donated all or part thereof comprising present day Coconut Creek Park – making it one very large open space stretching eastward from SR-5 southwest across I-95 past US-1 through various neighborhoods situated hereabouts over time almost immediately following his donation plus some surrounding acreage currently occupied by various breakwaters around Lake Okeechobee resulting largely from Hurricane Andrew Rita damage done hereabouts back then(Ferguson et al.). him as did others at that time thruout FL thruout early 21st CENTURY contributing materially thereto both Directly & Indirectly thruout most parts o f Peninsula excluding always Collier Country tho’estranged thenceforward WW2 ceased abruptly virtually entire production Of Coconut Shells globally effective 1934 ceasing suddenly due largely To an embargo placed shortly before landfall o f cataclysmic proportions thereby totally disrupting Business patterns worldwide req uiring prodigious investment ($$$) prior thereto even Major U .S . Coconnut creek has seen a lot of different things happen throughout its history; however, one event that stands out most is when Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida in 1992 causing major destruction all around the peninsula including heavily populated areas like Collier Country which were completely unaffected by Andrew however nearby Port Everglades were affected quite severely giving rise to another nickname for Coconut creek "Andrew's Graveyard" However even without Hurricane Andrew hitting South Florida specifically there are plenty reasons why Coconut creek has come to be wellknown throughout southeastern FL: 1) Its proximity - just 5 miles away from downtown Orlando! 2) Its huge list of attractions - ranging from beautiful nature hikes and bike rides right down to interesting museums like the Universal Studios Theme Park! 3) It's home for many popular sports teams - like the Orlando Magicbasketball team and American Professional Baseball Team Tampa Bay Rays!
