It sits on a tidal creek that forms its namesake - Coconut Creek - which borders Biscayne Bay to the south and has a coastline of over 18 miles. Coconut Creek's history dates back to when it was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. The community began as an Indian trading post on one of two main saltlicks (now known as Holmwood Park) that lay at its mouth on Coconut Creek. By 1800, coconut palms had replaced oak trees as the primary means of powering local homes and businesses because of their superior hardness and ability to stand up against waves during times of high water. In 1828, American forces burned down parts of Fort Brooke in what is now downtown Coconut Creek after driving British troops out of Cuba during the Seminole Wars. Afterward, many settlers arrived looking for new land to settle and built their homes along what would become Coconut Creek Boulevard today (later renamed Northwest Highway). A year later, Congress established Jacksonville Landing as an importation point for goods coming from Spanish Florida before finally allowing slavery in Florida in 1840. To this day, many descendants of early settlers still reside in Coconut Creek including some who own more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares) within walking distance of their homes! In 1860s-1870s much development took place near present day Coral Gables with hotels such as The Marlin House becoming popular among wealthy passengers disembarking from steamboats running between Tampa Bay and Key West; this area now includes most notably Ybor City across from Old Town Hall plaza today
