Coconut Creek is a small town in Florida that was founded in 1922. It is located on the east coast of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by Coral Gables to the south, Boca Raton to the west, and Apollo Beach to the north. The population of Coconut Creek was 5,848 at the 2010 census. Coconut Creek has a humid subtropical climate that features hot summers and mild winters. Coconut Creek began as a small fishing village on latitude 27° 8′ N, longitude 98° 33′ W. At first it was just 10 people living in simple shacks made from driftwood, logs, and coconut trees. By 1922 there were over 100 people living in Coconut Creek with businesses such as grocery stores, restaurants, lumber yards, boatyards (sailing and powerboat), banks (two branches of First National Bank), post office (opened in 1926), Masonic Lodge No. 1 (1922), Methodist Church (1922), Grange Hall No. 2 (1920). In 1924 an oil refineries were built near Coconut Creek by Standard Oil Company; when it closed down Standard Oil left behind many abandoned buildings including a Masonic Lodge which still stands today as Grange Hall #2A. Vacant lots became available for development starting around 1928 but no one bought them because they were too expensive to maintain or operate a business in an undeveloped area with no access to sewer or water systems! In 1932 Douglas MacArthur purchased some adjacent land from Standard Oil Company for $1 million dollars making him the first person ever to own complete rights to all of Miami-Dade County! A year later he donated another parcel of land which included most of Coconut Creek’s present day shopping center area – this tract became known as “The MacArthur Addition”! The townsite was renamed Coconut creek after General MacArthur who had played an important role during World War II leading American troops into battle on both sides! In 1951 President Eisenhower placed moratorium on new citrus estates being developed due to air quality concerns; however this did not stop developers from building new estates until 1978 when finally regulations were put into place prohibiting any more large scale developments without prior approvals from city planners! After years of planning and preparation local officials held their first meeting entitled “Development Guidelines for Coconut creek Area” on November 14th 1994 which provided technical assistance for potential development plans within the town limits! On December 6th 1994 construction began on what would become known as phase two of coconut creek: Sunrise center which opened its doors in 1996! Phase two saw continued growth with several highrise condominium towers being built along Sunrise Dr., Hunters Point Blvd., State Road 726 & Federal Highway 914 while also adding several smaller retail areas like Orchard Row Shopping Center & Harbour Towne Centre!!! Today there are over 350 residents living within walking distance of all aspects of everyday life including supermarkets,, gelato shops,, movie theaters,, theme parks,, golf courses,,,, pools etc….. almost everything you could possibly want or need exists right here at your fingertips whether you are looking for quiet enjoyment or rushed entertainment!!
