In 1992, however, Camp Grant Armory was sold to private interests and underwent several changes including conversion into an open-air shopping mall named after then-Mayor Jamie Bamberger (now Mayor Pro Tem). At its height, Camp Grant Armory amounted to more than 1 million square feet and featured a variety of stores, restaurants, theaters and apartments within its walls. Today’s incarnation of Camp Grant Armory is much smaller but still significant because it represents how American military deployments have changed over time-from large complexes used for training purposes to small retail venues that can be visited by anyone interested in learning about American militarism abroad!
