Cooper City was founded on December 3, 1915 by brothers Harry and Edward J. "Docter" Cooper with the help of $2,000 from their father. The first Coast Guard station in town was established on May 18, 1922 with four Coast Guardsmen and two pilots providing security for local businesses during electromagnetic radiation readings from a new radio station on Coconut Creek Boulevard. Cooper City was founded on April 3, 1914 by businessman and real estate developer Harry L. Cooper and his wife Alma Troupen as a small community near Fort Myers Beach. The name was chosen because of its location on Cooper River which flowed through the town. Cooper City experienced heavy development during World War II with the construction of Naval Base Guantanamo Bay and Camp Lejeune nearby. After the war, Cooper City saw an influx of refugees from South Korea and other parts of Asia who were displaced by World War II military activity in both Florida and Texas. This led to the nickname "The Ghetto" for Cooper City due to its high concentration of Korean American residents. At first light on January 1st 1942 Japanese bombers flew over Fort Myers Beach dropping incendiary bombs that destroyed many homes in town including Alma Troupen's home which she had built herself from materials she received from her father-in-law after he lost his own family during Japan's bombing campaign against Pearl Harbor three years earlier.
