Cooper City is a city in southwestern Florida, United States. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of Cooper University, an Ivy League university located in nearby Camden. Cooper City was founded on May 3, 1903 by two brothers from Arkansas: Arthur and Andrew Cooper. The town was named for their father-in-law, Ebenezer M. Cooke, Jr., who had settled there in 1881. The first post office in Cooper City was established on July 1, 1903. The name of the town was changed to Cooper City on October 8, 1907 after Arthur and Andrew's father-in-law passed away. In 1911 the name of the town reverted back to Cooper City when Ebenezer M. Cooke III died without issue and his estate became dormant. On March 21st, 1978 a tornado touched down just west of downtown Cooper City killing one person and injuring over 100 people including many children playing near power lines as a result of severe weather conditions that swept through much of southern Florida during that day/night period
