It is bordered by Kendall on the north and east, Lighthouse Point on the south and west, and Riverbend to the northwest. The Cooper City area was first settled in 1848 by John A. Cooper and his family of Welsh immigrants. The town was named after Colonel James K. Polk who served as Governor of Florida from 1845 to 1851 during the Seminole Wars. In 1886, General Philip Sheridan recommended that Cooper City be named after him because he had "conducted campaigns in this section." The name stuck and today's Cooper City is home to many of General Sheridan's descendants. In 1925, coopers contributed money towards building a library which became an important resource for the community. In 1924, electrician merchant James Waddell founded the first grocery store in Cooper City with a small lot on Northwest Eighth Street. By 1931 Waddell had developed into one of the leading grocers in Miami-Dade County and also operated several other businesses including a printing shop and a shoe store before his death in 1957. His son Harry Waddell continued the family business until 1991 when it merged with JCPenney Company to become JCPenney Incorporated In 1951, local businessman Claude Pepper organized a group of businessmen to form their own economic development corporation - The Claude Pepper Development Corporation - which began purchasing property north of Northwest Eighth Street beginning in 1953 and would eventually encompass much of what is now Cooper City In 1958, when Coral Gables annexed nearby Doral Heights, Cooper City's only shopping mall opened its doors with anchor stores department stores Sears and Kmart as well as two supermarkets - Publix Supermarket and Winnie's Grocery . In 1979 Coral Gables annexing nearby Parkland annexed another Shopping Center - this time anchored by Sears , JC Penney & Co.'s Home Depot . development over time has seen major mixed-use projects such as Town Centre Mall (opened 2001) replaced by new high school/community college complex (opened 2016), but most notably developerrendering LeJeune Golf Course into an open air recreational groundswith tennis courts as well as restaurant,. hotel complexes have been constructed such as One Executive Tower (2002) built on former industrial land adjacent to Creekside Marina;[1] [2] [3] [4] Target Plaza (2005)[5] which anchors I-95/I-10 motorway exit 417;[6][7][8][9][10] Regency Towers - designed by Skidmore Owings + Merrill LLP,[11][12][13][14];[15],[16] Mandarin Oriental Resort which opened on October 15th 2006 after being leased from Starwood Hotels Group plc.;[17],[18]'s Park Place Signature Residences completed Fall 2016
