The name "Cooper City" first appeared on a map in 1884 and was given to the area by H. G. Cooper, a sugar manufacturer who located his business near what is now University Drive and Northwest Seventh Street. The town started as a small farming community with only 12 residents in 1905 when it was created from parts of Doral and Cutler Heights. In 1940, the name changed to Cooper City after Wernher von Braun's father Dr. Wilhelm von Braun and namesake of Huntsville Alabama which he had visited while working for NASA at Marshall Space Flight Center; Huntsville being then an important center for American space research during World War II *. In recent years, Cooper City has experienced steady growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas such as Miami and Orlando*, as well as its close proximity to many cultural attractions such as The Kennedy Center OPERA House, Art Museum of South Florida* and Kendall Bus Terminal*. Cooper City was founded in 1928 by Dr. Edwin L. Cooper, a local doctor and landowner. The town was named after Edwin L. Cooper's father, who had also founded the city of Jacksonville, Florida in 1892. In 1933, the United States Postal Service moved its processing and mailing operations from Jacksonville to Cooper City after acquiring the old Post Office building there. The city experienced a population growth spurt during World War II due to the influx of military personnel and their families. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1945 before having a slight decline to 94,814 by 1960. During the postwar years, Cooper City became an agricultural center with many farmers producing hay, cotton and other crops. However, this prosperity ended in the early 21st century as struggling businesses replaced retiring farmers in downtown business districts such as Main Street and Cedar Avenue. As recently as 2000-2001, no single industry dominated downtown economic development; instead various small businesses were clustered together along commercial corridors such as Old Plantation Road (now University Boulevard), Park Drive (now Colonial Drive), Westheimer Road (now Veterans Parkway) and Midtown Boulevard (Now State Road 7). Downtown areas now feature few if any businesses other than crime prevention organizations or government agencies which have taken up space vacated by longtime retail tenants including IGA Supermarkets and Sam's Club warehouses
