Cooper City is located on the eastern edge of Miami-Dade County and is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the north and east, MidtownMiami to the south and west, and Cutler Ridge to the northwest. It is named after Colonel James W. Cooper who was an early settler in what is now Cooper City. The area that now Cooper City was first settled by Africans in 1836 as part of Fort Lauderdale plantation known as "Natchez". In 1838 Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Landing on Coopers Creek which became the nucleus of present day Cooper City. By 1840 there were about 20 slaves working on Natchez plantation including 5 women and 10 children under age 18. Slavery ended when white men took over Natchez in1846. In 1852 Drury bought 4 acre lot from Captains Taylor & Kapp for $60 + $4 per acre tax for future use as a public square with water frontage on both sides of creek for this new town site called "Pinecrest" (now Historic District). In 1865 it became part of Dade County established through a vote by voters at a county fairgrounds stadium near downtown Miami On November 21st 1861 United States Marines landed at nearby Key West Beachhead during US Civil War seeking volunteers to fight Confederate forces invading Floridas mainland; soon enough word spread throughout much of South Florida through military runners that America's newest land mass had come ashore just outside our borders! In 1865 Ft Pierce Amusement Park opened with ground floor amusement pavilion/ theaters/ gymkhana hall/ pool hall/ press box serving Federal troops until 1922; today remnants can be seen along Portobello Road between NW 24th St & NW First Ave SE near old fortifications built 1912-14
