Cooper City is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of Dadeland Gardens, one of Miami's largest shopping districts. The name "Cooper City" was given to the community by Colonel John A. Cooper who founded the town in 1892 on land he had purchased from J. Mollison and others in what is now Overtown neighborhood near Miami International Airport. In 1915, when Fort Lauderdale was established as a U.S. military post at Biscayne Bay, Cooper City became its primary commercial center with stores catering to soldiers and their families living along I-95 (then US1). In 1927, when American Telephone Company (AT&T) moved its corporate headquarters from Bell Laboratories to Parkland Avenue in Ft Lauderdale, it decided to move its main telephone switchboard from downtown Ft Lauderdale to Cooper City because that location offered more sun exposure and better sound quality than any other part of downtown Ft Lauderdale. By 1930 there were over 100 businesses in Coopersville with a population of 775 people; by 1935 this number had increased to 2,000 and by 1940 it had reached 3,000 residents when AT&T erected an elaborate steel frame building at 272–274 Parkland Ave., which still houses most of today's CooperCity business buildings including Frye’s department store (now Macy’s), BankAtlantic Trust Company Building (now HSBC), Home Insurance Company Building (now Samsung Electronics), Kress Drugs & Hardware Store (now Meijer) and several smaller stores plus two movie theaters: RKO Radio Pictures Theatre (1930), then United Artists Theatre becoming MGM Grand until 2006 when it reverted back to UA; both theaters were demolished during Hurricane Irma in 2017 In 1954 TWA Airlines took over maintenance for all Pan Am lines before they went bankrupt due to government regulation on airline ownership In 1957 Brown Bros., Incorporated opened up their first processing plant outside North America In 1959 Citrus Airways assumed control over Pan Am operations out of JFK airport after negotiations between Pan Am management and CIA Interim Director Richard Helms resulted in agreement between both sides not to fly Cuban refugees into or through JFK without congressional approval The new airport was only open for about 12 months before being closed due to financial problems caused by high fuel prices
