In 1916, Witherspoon persuaded his friends Averill Harriman and James Jardine to invest $10,000 in land for a new city that would include schools, churches and businesses. The town's name came from Captain Witherspoon's brother-in-law General Lewis Powell who had purchased some 1 million acres (400 km2) of what is now Cooper City from Governor Manuel López de Santa Ana in 1908 for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). When agent Dewey Crouse visited during World War I he found that 5% of all produce grown in south Florida was exported to Europe through Cooper City's port; meaning that this small community supported more than one thousand farmers who produced seventy percent of all exports entering south Florida during those years A post office called "Cooper City" was established in 1914, and remained operational until it closed in 1961 In 1925 Dr. John Burch bought 7 acres southeast of downtown for $10 per acre (0.40 ha), which became known as Burch Park after him In 1941 Mrs Florence Bender opened her namesake restaurant/bar/nightclub called Flo's Lounge which served American cuisine In 1962 Mayor Elie Abel developed plans for an expressway connecting Key West with points north including Tampa and Jacksonville Construction began on US 1R east of town along Sawgrass Expressway starting August 1966 and ended December 1969 The first phase cost $27 million with total project cost approaches $350 million over thirty years primary economic development has been retail corridors such as Coral Gables Boulevard linking Downtown Miami with Kendall Resort & Casino; MidtownMiami including Marriotts Hotel & Tower; Coconut Grove ; Wynwood - home to many high profile restaurants including Benihana Japanese BBQs.,and TGI Fridays ; Overtown -formerly Little Havana - now one of South Floridas most vibrant neighborhoods; Broadwalk Avenue Corridor linking Downtown Miami with Hollywood Hills Boulevard / Lincoln Road ; Navy Pier ; Liberty Bridge where visitors can go swimming or just take pictures.; Grand Central Terminal passenger station renamed "coopercity terminal" following donation by mayor Abel to Amtrak while serving as their new terminus
