The Coast Guard was founded on November 3, 1915 in Miami Beach, Florida as the Miami-Dade Lifeguard Service. It became the Coast Guard Reserve on January 1, 1959. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was created on December 15, 1942 in Coral Gables and it merged with the Coast Guard to form the Department of Homeland Security on September 26, 2002. Today, there are over 12500 members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and more than 5800 officers and enlisted men who serve as guards along our shores. The Department of Homeland Security has made a significant impact on our coast guard mission by providing increased resources for law enforcement operations and support to state and local governments.

Coral Gables, Florida was home to the Coast Guard from 1922 until it was merged into the United States Marine Corps in 1942. The Coast Guard's first station was on Coconut Grove Boulevard in Coral Gables, and its first officer was Captain George A. Macy who served from 1922-1927. In 1924, the Coast Guard moved to a new facility at 6th Avenue and Signal Hill Road in West Palm Beach. The next year, 1925, saw the addition of a lightship to the fleet which still operated today. In 1933, the Coast Guard bought its own vessel -the HMCS St John - and began using her for patrols along the Florida Keys. The following year saw another acquisition when they bought an HMCS Britannia which converted into a coastal patrolboat. By 1939, however, USMC jurisdiction had been established over all aspects of maritime security including law enforcement on our coastlines; so Captain Macy resigned effective 1 September 1939 and his successor Lieutenant Commander John Haggerty took over as Commandant of Coastal Guardsmen/Marines/Airmen (CG&A) with duties also including providing support for military operations ashore
Coral Gables is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered by Coral Gables to the north, Little Haiti to the east, Overtown to the south and Biscayne Bay to the west. The name "Coral Gables" comes from two words: "coral" meaning coral reefs and "gables" meaning roof top ridges or cliffs. The first settlers in what is now Coral Gables were brought over by Spanish explorers in 1521 as part of a mission caravan led by Fray Alonso de Villanueva. They called their new settlement San Miguel de Allende (St Mikes), after one of their main settlements in Cuba. By 1800, however, all but about 200 people lived in San Miguel because there was no land for farming near present-day Coral Gables. Only 30% of what is now Coral Gable was developed before World War II; most of it took place during the post-war boom when housing prices went up 50%. The first school opened in 1887 on Third Street corner First Avenue; it was quickly replaced by a Methodist church that burned down in 1893. In 1905, St John's Episcopal Churchorganized which moved into its current location on Second Avenue between NW 34th and NW 35th Streets that same year. The original building still stands today with additions made over time including an ambulance garage, tennis courts and a movie theater which turned out to be the biggest attraction in town until Hollywood Came To Town came along circa 1955). One interesting development that happened around this time was that many rich businessmen from South Florida started moving into what would become Coral Gables because they found it more affordable than Miami Beach or West Palm Beach (the other major areas where they could live). This included Pritzker family patriarch Henry Ford who built his home on Clearwater Drive just outside of town limits in 1927 followed by his son Edsel Ford who also bought land nearby and built homes such as Dearborn Heights (now Elmhurst) and Highland Park (now MidtownMiami). Other notable residents at this time include Hoot Gibson (founder/CEO of Wernham Hogg Paper Company), Artie Shaw (tenor saxophonist with Benny Goodman Orchestra)and Carmen Miranda (singer/actress with Perry Como Show Band). In 1954 Panama Canal expansion created huge tracts of newly acquired land east of Tamiami Trail adjacent to North Miami beach which became known as "The Miramar Sands". This led directly to increased development activity around Miramar Creek which bisected present-day CoralGables then flowed southeastward parallel to US 1 until it diverged near SW 185th Street just north of Biscayne Bay where commercial fishing began operationscausing significant pollution issues for years thereafterDD Note: According to some sources these waters were eventually diverted back towards North Miami beach.) A large steel mill built right next door on Northwest Fourth Avenue produced electric generators for local power companies during World War II while also creating jobs for locals [ note: according to legend ] . However much later this plant closed - leaving behind an environmental disaster when Guidelines For Reducing Pollution From Steel Plants were issued subsequently limiting production ]. After another fire damaged parts of St John's Episcopal Church late last century several attempts have been made since then(2010)to bring attention & rebuild due mainly due TO arson within past few years ). Today St John's Episcopal Parish functions primarily as an animal shelter although services are available 24/7 through their website ) As mentioned above early inhabitants mostly consistedof Spanish Immigrants who sent their children hereto learn English so they could find workmaintaining farms etc... The name "Coral Gables" was given to the community by General Arthur E. Browder who donated land for its incorporation as a town on December 15, 1921. The first post office opened in Coral Gables on October 18, 1922 and remained open until it was discontinued on July 14, 1935. The area that now makes up Coral Gables was originally part of Key West. On December 15, 1921 General Arthur E. Browder donated 4 acres (1 km²) of land to be incorporated into a new town called Coral Gables according to provisions of the Key West Land Grant Act of 1912 which had been passed after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of what had once been known as key west including Key Biscayne and Pinellas County. At that time there were only two towns in Miami-Dade County: Wynwood andMiami Beach. Although advanced planning did not occur until after World War II when development increased due to wartime demand for housing following America's victory in World War II, much of what makes today's Coral Gables so vibrant began developing during this time period with work done by locals such as banker Averroes Ramos and real estate developers like Henry Jankiewicz and Harry S Truman who helped turn downtown into one of the most thriving areas in Southwest Florida during the postwar boom years
