Coral Gables, Florida is a small community in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is bordered by the Everglades to the east and west, Biscayne Bay to the north, and Miami Beach to the south. The population was 11,813 at the 2010 census. Coral Gables was founded in 1914 as a citrus orchard by Marceline Fenton and her husband Willard L. Fenton. The city's name comes from two of its main Streets: Sunrise Drive (originally Sunrise Avenue) and Coral Way (later Coral Way Boulevard). In 1916, Floridian developer Harry Blackman named one of his properties Sunrise Heights after his wife's birthplace in England. In 1932, he renamed another property Sunrise Park after his daughter Pamela Blackman-Harding (1902-1984), who had married American businessman Clark Clifford. In 1954, with the annexation of southeastern Miami-Dade County by Miami Beach, Coral Gables became part of that city; however it retained its own governing body called "the booster organization." After several years of growth due to new developments such as shopping malls and an expressway connecting downtown with Broward County Airport, airport services were moved from downtown to Lauderdale Lakes in 1996. In 2006 Miami City Council voted 3–0 not to annex Coconut Grove which lies adjacent to nearby Doral on South First Street but instead agree to merge their departments into one government entity known as "Miami City Government". This merger would have eliminated both independent councils within Miami City Hall while still providing for mayoral elections and other municipal functions unique to each councilmember's district

The area now known as Coral Gables was originally part of what was then Spanish Cuba. European explorers discovered this land in 1513 when they sailed into Havana Harbour carrying news of a great landmass called America which they had discovered while exploring the Caribbean Sea. In 1662 Captain James Cook sighted an island that he named Australia after his homeland England; however this was not until 1768 that Portuguese captain Jorge Alvares gavelandized near what is now Coral Gables with some 400 hectares (1,200 acres) for Englishmen only; this gift has been credited with helping spur development in this once sleepy community today’s largest business district on Dania Beach between Flagler Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard
