Coral Gables is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of theMiami–Ft. Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Coral Gables" comes from two historical places in the area: Spanish Fort and Cudjoe Key. Spanish Fort was founded by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on April 6th, 1565 as part of the failed attempt to establish a permanent Spanish colony in South Florida during the era of exploration and expansion by Spain and her viceroys. The fortification may have been inspired by Spanish efforts to protect their possessions along Cuba's southeastern coast from English attack. Cudjoe Key, which lies 8 miles northwest of Coral Gables on Biscayne Bay, was first settled by Africans in 1775 as part of an effort to gain admission into what is now Miami-Dade County as an American colonies under British rule. The key's history dates back even further; it was acquired by Captain John Smith in 1763 for his Pensacola plantation after he successfully campaigned against Spanish control over that area. In 1868 it became one of several keys belonging to Dania Beach Township (later called Coconut Creek). In 1905, Coral Gables became a municipality within Miami-Dade County when it was created from parts of Dania Beach Township and Pompano Beach Township. As such, Coral Gables has jurisdiction over all but 3% of its total landmass – making it one of only 2 municipalities in the county with no limits on its size or jurisdiction (the other being Hollywood). According to the 2010 US Census report,[1] there were 1,641 people living in Coral Gables proper (excluding unincorporated territory), 552 residents who spoke only English at home (mostly elderly citizens), and 379 residents who spoke both English and Spanish fluently at home (about 60%).[2] Of these speaking residents aged 5 or older, 91% reported speaking either English orSpanish fluently at home; this number increased to 96% among those aged 10 or older.[3][4] Additionally, nearly half—46%—of all residents age 25 years or older claimed some form of proficiency in both languages proficiently; this percentage decreased marginally among those age 25 years or older who did not speak either language proficiently but nonetheless claimed some level thereof.[5] Among non-native speakers (%) reporting any skill level whatsoever abovebasic*, nearly two thirds possessed skills levels significantly above basic* – suggesting that many resident Cantonese speakers are able to engage easily with more advanced topics than most mainlanders would be expected given their backgrounds alone![6][7][8] *Percentages reflect skilled labor only

At that time it was one of only a few places in America where people could live off their land and farmsteads were primarily built around mangroves which offered shelter from hurricanes and other weather conditions. These days you can still see evidence of early settler life at several locations around town including Indianola Park (between Northwest Third Street and Northwest Second Street), Spring Garden Road (across Southwest First Street from Center Court), Beechwood Avenue (across Northeast Fourth Street from Methodist Episcopal Church), Coconut Grove Drive (west of Northwest Third Street just south of Palm Beach Ave.), Kew Gardens Avenue (northwest of Center Court between NW Second Avenue and NW First Avenue) – all Roads main thoroughfares today were once dirt paths connecting farms with homes or businesses near them. In 1861 when King George IV announced his intention to move Ulysses S Grant out of Georgia so he could take up residency in America permanently he recommended that Congress send him instead Professor James Buchanan because “he had long been connected with our country through close personal intercourse”(Hofstadter). This recommendation led to Grant being sent back to Virginia where he would serve as President before being inaugurated as our 35th president on April 14th 1868. After Grant’s inauguration many Americans began moving away from Richmond due to growing political unrest caused by southern secessionism; this led Floridians such as Drury Loyd Richardson who owned large plantations within spitting distance of Washington D.C., decided it was time for them too move out into what became known as Sun City – partaking heavily in American society but not having access eitherto education or health care despite living close enough for both! Sun City quickly lost its appeal when sound quality improved elsewhere in South Florida so Richardson turned his attention back towards Coral Gables which until then had been largely untouched by development! . . . In fact until 1920 there were no streets or buildings within walking distance even though much property was annexed by CoralGable since incorporation! Today most residents still enjoy getting around town without anything more than cars providing public transportation
