With just over 1,000 crew members she operated out of Miami Beach until July 1945 when she sailed into Yankee Harbor following disaster off Key West while escorting Convoy SC 129 en route to Tampa Bay; this despite Admiralty orders not to use gunsports while convoy escort duty! Her then commanding officer Lt Cdr J H Myers said: "We were ordered not only not to fight but also not show ourselves off...But we did our job." And so Prince of Wales spent most of her days cruising near shore! A day later veteran RAF airmen flying Spitfires attacked Japanese shipping at sea off Guantanamo Bay; five bombers destroyed 16 Japanese ships including three cruisers which had been escorting SC 129! She returned safely home seven weeks later on 4th September 1945 - well ahead of schedule - having accrued over 350 combat hours!!!
