The United States military has a rich history in Coral Springs, Florida. The first U.S. military troops arrived in the area in 1898, and the first combat action took place during World War I when American forces fought against Spanish forces on Christmas Day, 1914. After World War II, the United States military presence in Coral Springs increased as tensions between the Soviet Union and America grew stronger. In 1957, Coral Springs became an official city within the Miami metropolitan area and began to grow rapidly as a result of its popularity as a tourist destination. In 1999, then-Mayor Rick Simpson unveiled plans for what would become one of South Florida's most iconic landmarks: The Army Fort Lauderdale Civic Center. Construction began that year and was completed four years later on October 1st, 2001 under Mayor Simpson's leadership and with support from then-Army Brigadier General Edward Harker III. The fortifications surrounding downtown Coral Springs were addition to make it more secure while also providing local businesses with an opportunity to increase their exposure to the army garrison through marketing programs such as "Fort Lauderdale Goes To War." As part of this effort, Fort Lauderdale also erected two large tents used for ceremonial occasions such as town meetings and ribbon cutting ceremonies at various government agencies across South Florida. Today, The Army Fort Lauderdale Civic Center remains one ofSouthFlorida's most popular tourist attractions with over 2 million visitors each year! It is home to multiple exhibits related to U.S Armed Forces history including displays about Operation Neptune's Spear (the Korean War), Desert Storm (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2002), Hurricane Katrina (2005) and more! The mansion also served as a setting for several movies including Gone With The Wind (1939), Fort Apache (1867), My Cousin Orson Scott Key's Pirate Ship (1926), The Big Apple (1928), and White Heat (1981). In 1951, Coral Springs became an incorporated city under state law following passage of legislation designed to promote development along the St John River corridor. Over time, Coral Springs has undergone significant redevelopment - becoming known for its upscale properties that include country clubs, shopping malls, luxury hotels, golf courses, and beachside restaurants. Today’s population is estimated at more than 100,000 residents – making it one of South Florida’s largest cities after Orlando – and it remains an important center for business and cultural activities throughout Southeast Florida.
