Coral Springs, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. Coral Springs is a suburb of Miami and has a large concentration of high-end housing developments. The area that would become Coral Springs was first populated by Indian settlers in the early 1800s. In 1885, Congress created Miami Beach as part of what were then two separate municipalities, Dade County and Kendall County. The town of South Beach on Biscayne Bay was incorporated as Coral Gables in 1905. In 1912, when Dade County became one unit withMiami, Coral Gables became its second city and retains that name to this day. In 1925, South Beach annexed Plantation Key near Homestead Air Force Base to form an even larger city called Key West; however, this annexation did not take place until 1927 because Key West had already been annexed by Fort Lauderdale five years earlier. By 1957, all but two blocks of downtown Key West had been annexed by Coral Gables while remaining within Miami proper; ironically enough these last two blocks would come under control of Tallahassee after the City purchased them from the military in 1959 for $1 million dollars (the deal allowed Tallahassee to annex most if not all of Everglades National Park). It is the eighth-largest city in Broward County and the largest city east of Miami-Dade County. The area that now includes Coral Springs was first settled by Native American people who called it "Ocala" meaning "place where the stream rises." In 1839, Fort Brooke was built on the present site of Coral Springs to protect Jacksonville from Seminole Indian attacks. The town of Spring Hill – located on what is now NW 8th Street –was chartered in 1851 as part of Broward County. During World War II, Coral Springs became one of America's most important military bases with over 1 million soldiers and marines stationed there. After the war ended in 1945, many businesses closed down and Coral Springs experienced a rapid growth period which included becoming one of South Florida's wealthiest cities.
