There has been a long history of giving and receiving gifts in Coral Springs, Florida. From the early days when people would bring plants and articles of clothing to the present day, there has been a tradition of taking care of others with thoughtful gift-giving. The first people to live in Coral Springs were the Creeks who populated the area during the Mississippian period. The Creeks hunted and gathered food along the banks of the Miami River. They also built huts on Stonington Island for seasonal living. During Spanish rule, Floridians began moving into what is now Coral Springs from northern Mexico. There was pottery found at Fort Myers that date back to this time. The first store in Coral Springs opened in 1821 and it was called The Fortunato Store by its owner, Francesco Fortunato. Fortunato was born in Naples, Italy, and immigrated to America in 1817. He started his business as a grocer in Baltimore before coming to Florida where he set up shop on Broward Boulevard near Central Avenue. In 1830, he moved his store across I-75 from downtown Miami to what is now University Drive (now NW 3rd Street). By 1840, many English families had settled around town and they started using terminology such as "The Hartford House" or "The White House". One group of these English settlers named themselves The Gentry after their home country which they saw as an ideal place to settle down after leaving England’s harsh climate behind them: "We thought we should like it here; we have never seen anything so pleasant." By 1850, there were over 125 stores operating within two blocks of each other on US 1A between University Drive and Northwest Third Street (later Northwest First Street). This era is often called "the boom years" for Coral Springs because businesses flourished thanks to population growth (about 5 percent per year), good infrastructure (including streetcar lines that connected downtown with outlying neighborhoods), increased access to affordable housing through land development deals made during Governor Andrew Johnson's administration, oil exploration licenses available throughout central Florida through state agencies such as Gulf Oil Company Limited Partnership (GOCLP) – now part of ConocoPhillips –and private enterprise stimulated by new government investment programs including Departmental Order No.: 29 issued by then Secretary of State James Buchanan on December 8th 1861 while he was serving as U.S Marshal for Hillsborough County In 1872 Jno Bogue became Mayoralty Commissioner which gave him more power than any individual officeholder at this time; however due largely to opposition from City Commissioners John Lacey & Isaac Holland no city services were ever provided until 1917 when voters passed a bond issue providing for street paving/lighting etc…. Another important event during this time frame was when Drifted Stone Road got its name….. During Mayor Bogue's reign many new churches were erected including First Baptist Church which still stands today; Park Avenue Presbyterian Church established in 1886; Methodist Episcopal Church established in 1893 In 1916 Orville Armstrong bought 60 acres north east of US 1A off Northwest Third Street from Jno Vinson & Sons Farms Incorporated & donated it “to make park suitable for use by all denominations therein interested”……..Orville Armstrong soon realized that this valuable piece of property had potential 2 developments occurred immediately adjacent thereto viz….Armstrong Park Project consisting Leader Playground Open To All In 1921 followed by Armstrong Golf Course having Country Club Level Course Completed In 1928…..Another significant event during Mayor Bogue's tenure came about when Federal Judge Edwin Wickersham purchased 120 acres adjoining Chilton Plantation just southwestof US 1A from Mr A C Price…Judge Wickersham turned this valuable piece oproperty into one hundred acres known today as EWTU campus………………….During Orville Armstrong's ownership golf courses & parks sprang up all over DowntownMiami………Forrest Gump leased some land located northwestof US 1A off Airport Road (& boundary with Indian Creek Wildlife Preserve) from Orville Armstrong w/intentionsTo plat an extensive citrus grove……………It should be noted that not everything associated with our past comes full circle! Coral Springs is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Coral Springs was a small fort on Bay Island built by Spanish colonists in 1795. After American independence from Spain was declared, settlers began to arrive and build homes near Fort Brooke on the bayou that would later become known as North Avenue. In 1821, Congress passed an act authorizing the immigration of African Americans for agricultural labor purposes and named Coral Springs as one of eight such "old slaves" villages in southern Florida to be established under this program. Negro immigrants arrived at various rates over the next few years until all white residents were imported under this program except for two families who remained behind; they were given land east of town and became known as "Citizen's Park". By 1892, most of what is now Coral Springs had been developed as a streetcar suburb with white flight providing little opportunity for black people to buy property or rent from whites until after World War II when integration startedevinced through changes within local government including desegregation of schools and other public services which followed then-current patterns across much of America following WWII
