Coral Springs, Florida is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name comes from the Everglades and was given to it by the British during their military occupation of this area in 1846-47 as part of General James K. Polk's efforts to improve relations with Great Britain following its War of 1812. The first permanent European settler in what is now Coral Springs was Nicholas Baptiste who arrived in 1795 on an expedition led by Captain Pierre Gaudreau and land grant from King George III of Great Britain. Baptiste founded Fort D'Ebeuf on Christmas Island near present day Dania Beach and named it for his father, Jean Baptiste d’Ebeuf, Sieur de la Rivière des Caraocles (1685-1749). By 1800, over 100 Frenchmen had settled in what would become Coral Springs after being invited by Governor John Morgan to help build a road from Key West to Tampa Bay. French traders also operated outposts here until 1835 when American colonists began arriveing with plans to settle this undeveloped region granted them through charter settlements obtained from Congress under the Louisiana Purchase. After Spanish occupancy ended in 1898, organized industry did not take off until World War II when defense contractor Northrop Aircraft created an airfield here that served as a model for many future airfields throughout Southwest Florida In 1954 Coral Springs voters approved a motion passed by City Council declaring that they were becoming an independent municipality within Miami-Dade County without representation on either county council or on any boards or commissions related thereto including but not limited to school board; planning commission; fire protection commission; library board; streetcar commissioners/road widening commissioners etc., while continuing as providing services withinMiami-DadeCounty In 1965 Coral Springs became home to two major events which led eventually to its incorporation into the city of Miami: A referendum resulted in passage of Amendment 1 giving residents a voice at both the local and national levels regarding government operations and functions within city limits while also creating an elected mayor responsible for all issues pertaining directly to citizens rather than simply City Manager who reported back only indirectly unto City Council Amendments 2 & 3 followed suit granting more power and authority directly back unto citizens thru special taxing districts having same powers & privileges accorded adjacent municipalities
