Military gift history in Coral Springs, Florida goes back to the 1920s when General James M. "Jimmy" Wainwright founded the First Marine Infantry Battalion. The battalion was organized as a unit of the 1st Marines and first deployed to Nicaragua in 1925. In 1940, when World War II began, the battalion was redesignated as 3rd Marine Regiment and served in Guadalcanal and Majuro until 1944. In 1945, 3rd Marine Regiment was inactivated and its units were consolidated into 2nd Marine Regiment which served throughout World War II. From 1951-1956, 2nd Marine Regiment was called 4th Marines and then 5th Marines before being redesignated as 6th Marine Regiment in 1957. During the Vietnam era from 1969-1975, 6th Marine Regiment served with distinction at such places as Can Tho Air Base and Quang Ngai River Delta where they played an important role in crushing enemy forces while also sustaining heavy losses themselves. The regiment's last tour of duty came during Operation Neptune's Spear which ended on December 15, 1975 with the surrender of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) troops at Long Binh airbase near Hanoi. After their return home 6th Marines again played an important role within our military by providing security for our installations abroad including deployments to Desert Storm (1991), Kosovo (1999), Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003) and Panama (2006). Today, 6th Marines is one of two active duty marine brigades headquartered here in Coral Springs and has made a significant impact within our military community both domestically and abroad.
