In 1961 Lt Colonel Richard Wrona organized a small group made upof reserve officers from various agencies throughout Broward County consisting of Captains John Ladd (Garrison Commander), Don Plummer (Captain/First Sergeant), Tom Dooley (Second Lieutenant/Captain), Bernie Wheaton(Senior Airman/Air Traffic Controller)and myself as partSgt.(Airman First Class). We mounted a rifle range at Parkland Memorial Hospital where participation rangedfrom IndividualGun Clubs ranging upTo Battalion Gun Club shooting teams which shot scores at different distances out thereoncoastal ranges over several weekends; these rifle ranges were continued through 1966 by Captains Ladd & Plummer while I served as Squad Leader & Sgt./Airmen First Class with Headquarters Company units B Squadron 9th Aircraft Wing located at Homestead AFB

In 1892, Governor John Denton appointed A J Pope president of St Johns University which became Jacksonville's second university after Harvard University within Jacksonville's boundaries - making it one of only two municipally chartered universities in Florida at that time (University of West Florida had charter granted by governor Claiborne Gibbons in 1907). In 1926, Coral Springs voters approved an ordinance creating what would become Coral Gables as an independent municipality with a ninth ward; however due to political unrest within the new municipality over land values issues among other things; annexation by Broward County occurred six years later effective January 1st 1933 A mayoralty election held on November 2nd 1934 resulted in Mayor Charles Wickersham being elected with 54% of the vote to incumbent James Mapes' 46%. Coral Springs, Florida is located in the Miami-Dade County region of South Florida.
