Crestview, Florida is home to the United States Army Garrison Command. The land was donated by the residents in 1922 and it has been the home of the 7th Infantry Division since 1951. In 2006, the command moved from Fort Harrison to Crestview after years of being located at Fort Brooke in Miami-Dade County. Today, the garrison commands over 285 troops and officers who provide support for local military installations and activities throughout Broward County as well as surrounding counties. The USArmy Garrison Command traces its origins back to 1922 when a group of residents from Crestview gathered together to donate land to make way for an army post. At that time, there were only a few soldiers stationed in this area and there wasn’t enough space for them all on the property. The donation allowed for construction of what would become known asFort Harrison. The original fortifications manned by soldiers were not very strong and they were quickly overwhelmed by enemy fire during World War I. However, thanks to funding provided by Congressman Tom Lantos, construction began on a new fortification called Fort Brooke which was completed in 1924. This fortification was much more sturdy and able to withstand artillery fire than earlier structures within Fort Harrison. It also became one of Miami-Dade County’s premiere tourist attractions due to its beautiful views of downtown Miami and other parts of South Beach affectionately referred to as “the beachfront city” back then. In 1951, after many years of location changes, the 7th Infantry Division moved from Fort Harrison in Miami-Dade County (then part of Dade) into Crestview following renovations done at that location which includednew barracks, medical facilities, parade ground/dome etc.). Today, both units come under one command with members sharing services including enlisted men performing various duties such as guard duty or patrols around their installations while officers lead unit tours or provide leadership when needed. Crestview is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 3,034 at the 2010 census. Crestview is bordered by Pompano Beach to the east, West Palm Beach to the north, Boca Raton to the west and Lake Worth to the south. It is part of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Crestview were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1665. Crestview started as a mission station called San Pedro de las Cuevas de la Bahia Blanca. In 1896, a group of Englishmen purchased land near present day Crestview from Mission Santa Clara de Asis for $1 million dollars. This group built houses on what is now known as Old Baldy Road and named their new settlement after Sir John Auchinleck, 1st Baronet of Banffield (1768–1852), an Englishman who had bought land in Cuba for £10,000 in 1793 and then sold it for £30,000 more two years later. The name changed again in 1902 when Colonial Trustees decided that "CrestVIEW" would be more appropriate than "Banffield". In 1925, another group of Englishmen bought property adjacent to where they had been living since 1896 and renamed it Kew Gardens after Lord Curzon's estate at Kew Gardens which they had visited while on vacation some time earlier. The original crestview subdivision developed along State Road A1A which ran throughpresent-day Crestview from its inception until 1963 when BRT constructed I-95 through much of Broward County hellowith its increased speed limit coming into operation that year). Today most residents maintain allegiance either with their original hometown or neighboring Pompano Beach due to its geography being such that one can easily commute between both communities without having any major problems getting around town center traffic limits; however some do commute back home each day if needed during business hours or weekday evenings when schools are out or weekend night life begins breaking down inside municipalities limits (e.g., Weston). As summarized by historian Drs Margaret Atwood and Barry Naiman: "The community [CrestVIEW] sprung up spontaneously on virgin forested acres rapidly drained by man - clearing forests gradually replaced cattle ranching as the mainstay economic activity." By 1940 there were only six homes vacant; within 10 years all but one house had been built and rentals became available for those not already owner/occupiers of land within minutes of arriving ion 1941 establishing ". . ."a self-sufficient enclave." One significant difference between then and now is that then no public transportation was available beyond walking or biking so people relied heavily upon cars ferrying goods necessary for their subsistence such as groceries shopping etc.; while today there are several buses running throughout town which provide service outside peak hours; furthermore thanks largely to Avesco FLWILTA (www) internet service becoming accessible starting around 2005 many residents have become involved with various online forums/websites providing social interaction opportunities totaling over 2 dozen different topics related to everything from real estate transactionsandaLake Worth life historyto agricultureand even dog training
