Crestview's civic and cultural institutions include the University of South Florida (USF), which has a main campus in Coral Gables and three satellite campuses in Davie and Sunrise; Broward County Regional Park; and Crestview High School, which offers classes from ninth to twelfth grade. The name "Crestview" comes from two sources: first, an early settler named John Crouch who surveyed the area in 1799; second, when Congress granted approval for USF to become a university in 1902 it named its new main campus after Colonel James Wofford cresting the hill that overlooked it on his estate called Park Ridge on Fort Lauderdale's southern border. Today many residents refer to their hometown as "Crestview". Rising water levels caused major flooding during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which destroyed much of Crestview's center business district but also created some of its most famous landmarks such as USF's Coral Gables Campus and Sunrise Ranch Resort - home to both USF football games since 1935 as well as other events annually like Oktoberfest or St Patrick's Day celebrations. While restoration work continues today marked by periodic floods each year during drenching weather conditions (due mainly to Hurricane Irma), overall damage has been largely limited due to better engineering practices over time with few direct hits by hurricanes. The community experienced another flood event on September 11th-2013 when seawater flooded parts of Kendall Park Boulevard between Everglades Parkway & Utopia Avenue causing extensive damage including power outages for several hours along with widespread vehicle loss across multiple streets within walking distance of affected areas. Crestview is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ferry Pass–Butler metropolitan area. Crestview is an agricultural town with many farms and ranches dotting its landscape. The town's main businesses are the Crestview Mall and the Crestview Farms amusement park. The first people to live in what is now Crestview were two families who came from Mobile in 1851 and built a house on East Hwy 412 near present day Fort Walton Beach. When Mobile was destroyed by fire in 1855, the family moved to what is now CrestVIEW and started a grocery store there that operated for about 20 years before it closed down because of economic conditions. When Escambia County was created in 1907, Crestview was one of its first towns and included within its boundaries until 1925 when it annexed most of Butler County including what is now Crest VIEW. At that time, most of the people living there were farmers or ranch hands who bought land from the county or received grants from the state government to build homes on it. In 1945, when Escambia County merged with Duval County to form Jacksonville County, all but 3 out of 10 municipalities within Escambia County were merged into Jacksonville County as well as any unincorporated areas therein (including parts of CrestVIEW). In 1979, after much discussion between residents and leaders at both levels of government about whether or not to keep Crown Heights Elementary School open while other schools consolidation took place throughoutEscambia County (which left several hundred students without school), voters approved Mayor Floyd Dyer's proposal to keep Crown Heights open despite high costs associated with building new classrooms for more than 900 students inside an existing elementary school complex which had been vacant since 1975 due to cost overruns associated with renovations/supportive services expansion project funded by unrestricted state money earmarked for ESCAMBIA COUNTY only during those three short years following annexation (i.e., prior to Tax Increment Financing being put into effect). today Crown Heights Elementary School remains open as your local history museum!
