The fort was named for General James Broome, who had been killed in action at Chinandega Creek during the Mexican-American War. The fort was also built to protect settlers on the Gulf coast from Seminole Indians and pirates. In 1912, Fort Brooke was decommissioned and its assets sold to finance a new military base at nearby Niceville. Niceville served as the home of the United States Forces Europe until 1955. From then until 1991, it was the home of NATO’s Allied Command Europe (ACE). During this time period, Crestview became an important military community because it housed many of America’s most senior commanders and officials. These include Adm. Elmo Zumwalt (later CEO of Lockheed Martin), Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf (chief of staff for US Central Command), Gen. John Shalikashvili ( commander-in-chief Georgia Military Region) and Lt.-Gen. Richard Myers (chief intelligence officer for US Northern Command). After ACE moved to its new location at Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst in 1995, Crestview became one of Americas largest post-9/11 military communities with over 12,000 residents supporting more than 350 jobs within the local defense industry sector. Today, Crestview is a thriving community that is home to both returning servicemen and their families as well as civilians who support our Armed Forces through sales and services related to recruitment and retention programs statewide.

In 1923, Crestview voters approved annexation by Pinellas County and growth accelerated as new subdivisions were built on former farmland. Today, attractions include several shopping malls and parks as well as a naval station serving both Naval Station Clearwater and Naval Station Miramar; all located within walking distance of each other. One significant industry in Crestview has been seafood production for local restaurants and home-cooked meals since at least the late 1970s when two local companies began to supply shellfish from out of state to local restaurants under the name "Creston Seafood". By 2006 there were over 50 retail stores selling seafood items from local fishermen and processors operating across more than 20 waterfront districts throughout Pinellas County including Downtown Clearwater; Hunters Point; North Port; Port; Dunedin; St Petersburg Beach; Hialeah Gardens; Belleair Beach ; Satellite Beach ; Gulfport ; Citrus Park ; Sunrise Key ; Naples Lakeshore

Crestview is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its ZIP code is 32609. Crestview was established in 1887 as a small farming community on the east coast of Lake Okeechobee. By 1904 it had more than 100 residents and had two stores and a post office. The first school in Crestview opened in 1905. The first church was built in 1907 and became an Episcopal parish in 1916. In 1923 Crestview became a city with its own mayor and City Council. In 1925 the city annexed the towns of Davenport to the south side of Lake Okeechobee, creating what is now known as Davenport-Crestview Township; but CrestVIEW retained its own government until 1959 when it became part of Polk County under county law which applied only to Polk County residents The original crest view sign from 1909 can be seen at the intersection of US Hwy 301 & State Road 713 (now SR 713) just outside town limits
Crestview was founded in 1868 by Capt. Elijah P. Smith and the town was named for him. The first post office was established in 1870, and the first store was built in 1872. By 1888, Crestview had a population of 350 people. The town renamed itself to Fort Lauderdale in 1908 after being annexed by the City of Miami Beach. In 1959, Fort Lauderdale became an independent city and Crestview merged with it.
