The United States Navy has a long history in Crestview, Florida. The Naval Air Station ( NAS) at Crestview was the first naval air station in the Pensacola area and it was established on May 12, 1917. The first aircraft to fly from NAS Crestview were two Curtiss Henschel H-9E flying boats. NAS Crestview was used as a training ground for pilots and navigators during World War I before it became an operational air station. NAS Crestview played a significant role in the Korean War by providing aerial refueling and support for American forces. In 1974, NAS CrestVIEW was closed due to budget cuts and its assets were transferred to NAS Tampa Bay. However, since then, NAS Tampa Bay has been using some of its former assets including the hangar at NAS Crestiewood which is now home to the Fleet Marine Forces Museum. In 1990, after 25 years of service,NAS Tampa Bay closed its doors effective January 1st with all naval aviation being reassigned from TampaBay to Naval Station Norfolk Virginia effective February 15th 1990. From that date forward all Navy Aviation activities were moved ashore at NAVSTA Clearwater until 2002 when they again relocated back to their old location -NAS Tampa Bay’s property adjacent to Clearwater Harbor – when Naval Air Station Clearwater reopened following Hurricane Katrina. Now OPERATIONAL again as Naval Air Station Jacksonville Beach! On October 3rd 2020 USS John F Kennedy (CVN 78) made her final cruise out of Clearwater Harbor while being towed by USS Samuel Roberts (DDG 54) across the Intracoastal Waterway en route to her new home port – Yokosuka Base Japan – NS Jacksonville Beach followed suit on October 7th 2020.. It should be noted that both ships had been decommissioned since Sept 20th 2020….That leaves just USS Harry S Truman (CVN 66), currently moored at Stennis AFB Mississippi as she awaits her turn next! As we move closer into our 21st century there are many questions we still have about why these vessels were mothballed; what could have happened if they had not been mothballed? We will never know for sure but one thing is for sure…..these sailors will always remember their time spent here at NAVSTA Clearwater!

Crestview is a town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. Crestview is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Crestview" has been used by people of all ages since the early 1800s. A post office called CrestVIEW was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1951. In 1905, Jens Jensen (Jensen's Creek) donated land to the town for a public park which would eventually become known as Jensen Park. In 1925, Hardee's restaurant opened its doors in what is now Crestview Boulevard and it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations today. It became official that Crestview had officially become a town on December 5th, 1928 when Mayor Halsey pronounced it "Crestwood". The first school in CrestVIEW was built on West Broward Road near modern day Kendall Drive close to where Nike’s Headquarters are currently located. The school district serving CrestVIEW disbanded in 1952 but reopened as soon as proper facilities were available within the new Town Hall building across from I-95/State Road 825 (now US 1). The old School Board Building still stands today and can be viewed from Sunrise Blvd./Kendall Dr., just east of I-95 Today there are over 30 businesses operating within CrestVIEW limits with an estimated payroll of $183M annually including services provided by over 350 employees! These businesses represent everything from small agricultural concerns to major chain stores! All have produced jobs and wealth for our community! There are no doubt examples throughout our history of how hardworking small business owners have contributed vitally to both local government coffers and downtown revitalization efforts! Today we celebrate 50 years since our incorporation into this great county – let’s keep moving forward together!"
