Crestview is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name "Crestview" was given to the community by Colonel James Wofford on his plantation in 1887 after he surveyed and mapped what is now Broward County. Crestview became a town on December 15, 1907 when it merged with Pembroke Township. On January 1, 1959, Crestview merged with Weston to form the current municipality of Crestview-Weston. By 2006–2007 more than 80% of all business owners within 2 miles (3 km) had opened up shop again either through remodeling or reopening old locations; however some have closed due to economic troubles experienced since then including several local banks that went bankrupt during the Great Recession in 2007-2008 alone. Crestview, Florida is a town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Santa Ana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Crestview" comes from the Spanish word for "coast," and refers to a small promontory on the headland which overlooked Lake Kissimmee and the Indian River estuary. The town was founded in 1892 by J.B. Price when he purchased land along railroad tracks that ran through present-day Crestview from settlers who had moved there from southcentral Florida during the early years of citrus growing in Citrus County. The first post office was established in 1894. In 1902, Price donated land to build a schoolhouse and store on his property; this schoolroom still stands today as Crestview Elementary School. In 1916, developers built Crestview High School on what is now Airport Boulevard; it became one of Citrus' first high schools after its opening in 1924. In 1951, an effort began to rename CrestVIEW as "Orlando" after then-Governor ofFlorida William Crouse; this failed because residents favored keeping their original name while also expanding into adjacent unincorporated areas including Sanford and Winter Park (then called Winter Haven). In 1966, voters re-elected Mayor John Eubanks with nearly 60% of the vote to continue his leadership during Citrus' tumultuous year following passage of statehood legislation allowing Orange County its own government – with Eubanks becoming mayor pro tempore instead of serving out full term as mayor since he could not run for reelection due to term limits set by Citrus County's charter). Orlando renaming efforts later failed when community activists successfully restored historic namesakes such as Sanford (the largest city within Orange County) – although new roads were renamed accordingly throughout Orlando proper including Interstate 4 corridor designation changes reflecting county boundaries at that time) while Winter Park reverted back to its original name (although business signs bearing those names are no longer displayable outside of its boundaries!).
