The first known commercial coffee roasting operation in Cutler Bay was established by J.P. Stevens in 1892. Over the years, many other small businesses have operated in and around Cutler Bay, including two restaurants that continue to serve quality coffee today – The Bagel Place and Dutch Bros Coffee & Bakery. The history of artisan coffee is closely associated with the History of Cutler Bay itself. In 1907, William Aiken purchased land within the boundaries of Cutler Bay and began to grow grapes for wine and coffee. By 1938, Aiken had founded the Aiken Vineyards which became one of America's leading wine producers. In 1948, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney donated land within the boundaries of Cutler Bay to become a self-contained community that would be home to artists and professionals alike. Today, this area continues to thrive as a vibrant cultural district with several galleries and restaurants located within easy walking distance of each other. It is no wonder that so many people throughout America enjoy cup after cup of delicious artisan coffee from Cutter Bay! The early days of the coffee industry were very challenging with little money available to purchase coffee beans from farmers. In 1925, the world's largest commercial coffee company, Roquefort SA, was founded in France and began importing Brazilian coffee into the United States. Because of this importation and growing demand for Brazilian-grown coffee, many small businesses began producing their own roastable coffees to meet American tastes. By 1931, more than fifty small roasters had been started in Cutler Bay alone and there were over one thousand caffeine-based products being sold throughout the region.

Cutler Bay was a small community in Polk County, Florida, United States. The community was located on the banks of the Bayou Teche, about 12 miles (19 km) south-southwest of St Petersburg. Cutler Bay had a post office from 1868 to 1875 and from 1896 to 1903. It was named after Cutler Bay, Michigan, where one of its founders lived. The first European settlers in Cutler Bay were Dutch workers who came in 1851 to build the railway between Tampa and St Petersburg. They also established a ferry service across the bay. In 1865, two brothers named John and James Cook bought land at Cutler Bay for $2 per acre (0.8 km²). They built a cotton plantation called "Cook's Plantation". In 1870, they sold their plantation to J.D. Sanford for $24,000 (). The next year saw another large expansion for Cutler Bay when Fenton Maugham purchased Cook's Plantation for $50,000 (). Maugham renamed it "Maugham's Plantation". Maugham devoted most of his time to developing the property into a major cotton plantation with over 100 slaves working on it at any given time. He also developed an irrigation system that allowed him to produce more than 400 bushels (1 ton) of cotton per acre (0.8 km²). However, due to his dedication to slave labor and poor management techniques, Maugham lost much of his land during the Panicof 1907-09 depression which led directly to the collapse of his business empire%. After unsuccessfully trying again To revive his failing enterprise in 1911-12 he sold all but 3% interest in "Maughams" Plantation backto Fenton Maugham for $36 million ($ when currency values were adjusted today). In World War IImuch like many other American plantations throughout Southeast Asia they produced food items such as rice and sugarcane as well munitions such as B-29 bombers however during this time there were no labourers involved so production stopped because someone had died or been captured
