The first resident of the area was William Dyer who built a cabin on the shores of Lake Butler around 1871-72. By 1880s most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Florida or away from Flaherty County due to economic hardship brought about by railroad construction along the coastlines of Central Florida. However, one group of early settlers - the Cutlers - persevered and founded their own community near present day Cutler Bay on what is now State Road 7A (now route 26) in 1870-71 under leadership of patriarch John W. Cutler Jr.. In 1898 when newly created Sarasota County was split into three parts - Sarasota Proper including Cutlerbay & Holmes Beach & South Walton – cutlerbay remained within Sarasota County although its boundaries were redefined based on Palm Beach County’s growing size at that time The Cutlers Museum of Art and History opened its doors to the public in 1978 with funds provided by Mrs Abe Cuttercombe who served as museum treasurer from 1975 until her death in 2006 In 1990 Dr David Levy became curator emeritus with responsibility for collections operations On October 15th 2009 local history enthusiasts groups gathered at Old School Hall which had been converted into a cultural center adjacent tocutlerbay post office building for a BBQ cookout/ historical event dubbed “Cuter” produced by local historian/Recorder Donny Beasley .
