Cutler Bay is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Cutler Bay is known for its crystal clear waters and white sand beach. The first resident to permanently settle in Cutler Bay was Moses Coffin in 1853. He built his home on what is now the north side of town, just south of present-day Middle Street. After a few years of residency, Coffin's wife died and he moved out to live with his brother-in-law on their property on Miami Beach Drive near Indian Harbour Boulevard. Nine years later, they donated all of their land to the town for development purposes which would eventually include Cutler Bay Elementary School and Cutler Bay Recreation Center as well as Cutter Bay Marina which opened in 1984. The community was established by early settlers as a small fishing village on the mouth of the bay. By 1892, Cutler Bay had become a busy port and commercial center. The population of Cutler Bay grew rapidly during the 20th century, with industry and development bringing new life to the town. In recent years, Cutler Bay has been slowly losing its importance as an economic center and its residents have turned to more rural pursuits. However, aspects of its history that remain important to the town include its rich maritime history and culture, as well as its many historical venues and attractions.
Cutler Bay is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Cutler Bay was James Mays who arrived in 1837. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the bay. Cutler Bay became a post office in 1840. In 1845, entrepreneur John Hargrave established a ferry service from Cutler Bay to Jacksonville. The passenger boat ferried goods and passengers between Cutlers Bay and Jacksonville until 1893 when the railroad took over the ferry service. In 1902, Harry Kapp set up a grocery store and restaurant on US 98 near present-day Town Center Drive in Cutler Bay which remain open today as Kapp's BBQ & Grille. Kapp's restaurant served as an early social club for many generations of residents of CutlerBay including Mayor Rick Singer (1989-1993).
