Cutler Bay is a small town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of Fort Myers Island. The population was 5,471 as of the 2010 census. Cutler Bay is part of the Naples-Ft Myers Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit Cutler Bay was Captain John Smith in 1608 when he and his crew were investigating the Indian island of Cutchogue off Cape Sable. He named it after one of his men, James Cutler (1584-1641). In 1768, George Washington sailed past Cutler Bay during his trip from Pensacola to Boca Raton. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson moved troops from Mobile to Fort Myers Island and established Fort Pickens there. The town was renamed Cutler Bay after him in 1851. A post office operated at Cutler Bay from 1852 until 1907. In 1916, World War I began and by September 1917 over 1,000 soldiers had arrived at Ft Myers for Camp Funston which became known as Battleship Island in honor of US battleship USS Enterprise (CV-4) that had been sunk by a mine east of Guantanamo Naval Base on 8 October 1915 while carrying supplies for Turkish forces fighting against British forces under Commander Sir John Moorehead (1862-1921). On 10 October 1917 Enterprise’s captain ordered all hands abandoned ship then Proceeded back towerto their basecamp where they hided out until relieved by another Allied warship 2 days later; this story has been told many times and several versions have emerged about what actually happened .
