By 1955, Cutler Bay had become one of the most Metro areas in Florida with over 1 million residents and growing industry. The current name Cutler Bay was chosen to honor Henry H. "Hank" Cutler, who was instrumental in its growth and has been involved with many aspects of its history including being the first resident of Cutler Bay Township (now part of Sarasota County) on December 6th, 1907. Cutler's grandson, George H. Cutler, also became an important figure in early Cutler Bay history as railroad official and mayor of the town from 1924-1929; he is also buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Sarasota County. Cutler Bay experienced its heyday during World War II as a significant naval base for the USMC with over 350 marines stationed here until 1945 when it was surplus to military needs and decommissioned following the war. However, despite this shortcoming, Cutter Bay has since regained some of its former glory as an agricultural center with many local farmers producing fruits, vegetables and other items such as chickens and beef cattle. Today’s community is located on one of Sarasota County’s most picturesque beaches which offers plenty of activities for both locals and visitors including swimming (especially during those hot summer days), fishing, boating, windsurfing and more than just picnics – there are buses available daily from downtown Sarasota for residents or daytrippers alike to explore all that Cutler Bay has to offer!
The Cutler Bay area was first settled by the Creek Indians in the early 1800s. The area was known for its salt and deer hunting, and it was one of the most important centers of trade in Florida before Seminole Indian attacks made it a largely Spanish-speaking region. In 1821, Colonel James K. Polk and Lieutenant Governor John C. Brevard acquired 1,500 acres of land at Cutler Bay to create what is now Polk County. The area became a major cattle market and shipping center during the 19th century, thanks to its location between Tampa and Jacksonville on the Gulf of Mexico. The commercial success of Cutler Bay led to other development in the area, including a railroad system that ran through the region in the early 20th century.
