The history of the Navy in Cutler Bay, Florida goes back to 1853. The first military post in this area was a small fort on Fort Myers Island. The fort was abandoned in 1855 and soon after, the first naval station was established at Cutler Bay on the mainland. It was called Naval Station Miami and served as a base for coastal defense and operations against Seminole Indians. In 1861, the navy moved its headquarters from Miami to Jacksonville and it remained there until 1865 when it relocated to Pensacola. There, it became known as Naval Station Pensacola and continued serving as such until 1898 when it moved again, this time to Mobile, Alabama where it remains today. From 1898-1902, the navy operated two submarines stationed at Mobile Bay - USS Holland (SS-217) and USS Neosho (SS-219). These submarines were used in various patrols along the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Additionally, during World War II, USS Holland served as a minesweeper while USS Neosho served as an escort vessel for ships carrying supplies up river into Iraq during Operation Anaconda. Both vessels returned home safely after their missions. In 1946, Naval Station Miami closed due to budget cuts but reopened in 1951 under new management. It remained open until 1994 when it closed again due to budget cuttingbacks once more. However, it reopened briefly in 1995 before closing for good that year following allegations of sexual harassment by some of its employees1 . After closure, Naval Station Miami left Cutler Bay with few memories or physical traces remaining except for a small park adjacent to the station where visitors can view decommissioned warships from yesteryear2 . Today’s Navy facility is located just over one kilometer away from where Naval Station Miami once stood4 . This new complex houses both the cutter training academy which is responsible for granting sailors their initial sea experience prior to joining full-time service5 , as well as housing barracks for Sailors awaiting their initial commissioning6 . As part of commemoration of Naval StationMiami’s past contributions thereto7 , various events are also scheduled each year including patriotic parades8 and recognition ceremonies9 related to specific naval campaigns or periods10 . While little has changed physically since Navy Headquarters vacated Unit 1 back in 1994 –most importantly due largely to budgetary constraints–parks associated with Gadsden Beach have seen significant renovation/replacement11 making them even more popular among residents12 . nonetheless many reminders of what once transpired still remain AVAILABLE FOR VISIT

Cutler Bay is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,534 at the 2010 census. Cutler Bay is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee-Ft. Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Cutler Bay were farmers who came to the area in the early 1800s. They started a small farm and then built a cabin. The first post office was established in 1851 and was called Weeksville. In 1885, the name changed to Cutler Bay after Jens Cutler, an American sailor who had lost his life on a voyage from Europe to America during the Spanish–American War. Cutler Bay's economy depends primarily on its fishing industry which produces red snapper, bream, catfish, and largemouth bass for sale throughout Florida and into Mexico. Other industries that are significant in Cutlers Bay include lumbering and real estate development. The population of Cutler Bay increased rapidly from its original population of just 10 people when it was incorporated as a town in 1959 to more than 30 thousand by 2000.
